Yes, I think I understand the distinction between a widget and an app. My question: does the existence of a widget for an app preclude adding a simple app icon to a home page?

I've got a couple apps that have big widgets available in the widget list - Doggcatcher and Astrid. Nice widget aside, I'm not really looking for either of them to be in my face displaying active content, I just want fast access to them off a home screen. But I can't find either of them in the list of apps I can add to home screens.

Is this a general thing - if an app has a widget, there won't be an icon available?

Open your apptray and long press on any app and it will "pop loose" and you can drop it on your home screen.

And, another newbie Android user here... is the opposite possible?

I like the "Today in History" widget from HTC, but it takes up the entire screen, is kind of sluggish, and it's one of those things I'd probably just want to look at once a day.

But as it's only a widget, I presume there's no way of viewing it apart from the widget, so that means it has to be opened and placed on a screen? I'd love to be able to just have a shortcut to the contents of a Widget without it being permanently on a screen!
