Found an app called EasyTether that allows you to do USB tethering without root access.
EasyTether Lite - Android app on AppBrain
The free version blocks secure https:// sites but the paid version is only about $10, which is less than PDAnet. (And less than I "donated" to Aonic for a webOS app that never worked).
It was pretty easy to set up and seems to work pretty well. Haven't paid for the upgrade, but probably will. Recalling how hot, hot, HOT my Pre became doing wifi tethering, I'm content to stick with USB as long as it works.
