what's up everyone I'm trying to set Handcent as the default messaging app but the Set default button is grayed out and the clear default button looks the same way on the stock messaging app too...so how am i suppose to set a default?

You can't set another sms app as default across the system, neither to clear the default for the stock one. T-mobile provisions your phone with the sms settings for your device (which works with the embedded sms app). I'm using Go SMS Pro and in the app's help page you have a warning not to erase your stock app even if you are rooted. 3rd party sms apps just pulls messages based on the stock client data configuration. The most you can do is to turn off stock sms alerts and (at least with the app that I'm using) for the first time when you tap on a contact and choose "send sms" the phone will ask you which app to use. Choose wisely ;) and check the box "default". I hope this helps.
