I justed wanted to post here about a working method for setting a machine name or hostname for my Nook Tablet. Why? Makes it much eaiser to identify intruders on a network if all your own machines have distinct names.

The NT normally comes with a standard generic name like android_xxxxxx like some smartphones. If you have more than one android device on the network this can get confusing.

I tried a few methods but I should note here that I am running v1.4.1 and this requires the device to be rooted (as mine is).

I tried setting the /proc/sys/kernel/hostname to what I wanted. This.failed though it read properly on the device but my router still showed the old hostname.

I then tried adding the 'hostname' command in the dhcp.conf file. Same results.

Finally I uses the command;
setprop net.hostname MyHostName

I should also say that have all three settings still set at the same time, I doubt all 3 are required but... You never know.

To make the changes persistent in the first and final of the two options, I used the /data/boot_complete_hook.sh which will need to be created with superuser permissions and set as executable.
