several broken cases now...

Hello all..

I've had my Droid for a little over a month now and have had TWO hard plastic cases break on me after hard falls to the cement (a little clip on the front cover chipped and now the front cover comes off with little effort ). Luckily, Verizon allowed me to exchange the case the first time, and hopefully they will again, but before I go back to the store, I was wondering if there was any other case that you guys have had that have NOT broken after falls.

I was told by a friend that a silicone case may be my solution, but I was looking for something that won't be so grippy when pulling in and out of my pocket etc. And of course I am looking for something semi-fashionable (ie not excessively bulky and maybe in a color other than black) that can take a fall from a clumsy girl!

If you have a tendency to drop your expensive smart phone onto concrete from on high, then you may want to look into not owning an expensive smartphone. Since no case will really offer you that much protection from falls onto concrete from on high...

Agreed. My sister had an iPhone 3G, with a silicone case, dropped it from 4 feet off the ground onto concrete, and the glass completely shattered. Totally ruined the phone. If you drop your phone a lot, chances are you're better off with a dumbphone and some phone insurance than a $400 phone and some silicone case. Sucks, but it's the truth.

Actually, the fact that the case broke may be a good thing---it absorbed the shock and not the phone.

Having said that, I've been pleased with the Innocase Surface from Seidio. It's thin but strong. I dropped my phone once from just a couple of feet. The bottom portion of the two-piece case popped off. No harm done.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest negatives about having a slide out keyboard is finding a solid case. I just ordered a metal case from boxwave. It is the only case i know of that covers the device, and prevents the keyboard from sliding,unless it is open. I had one like it for my Treo and loved it. Whether or not it is stylish is up to you.

However, there is no way in heck I am going back to a dumbphone.. I've had several smartphones for four years now and I refuse to go back to that technology.. I've never had a problem like this any of my previous smartphones. I think it's the fact that the case has two pieces that don't actually snap together.

that1bb - I may look into the boxwave case since I don't actually use the physical keyboard often.. seems like everyone else uses it more than I do..

Does anyone know anything about the otterbox commuter case yet? I know it's not out yet but i do know that otterbox typically has tough cases.

I been waiting for Otterbox to release a tough case aswell.
Would love to put it to the test
Not that I would intentionally harm my droid.

You could always get a hard case, find a hole in it or something, and then tie a string to it and to your jeans

Just don't drop your phone. Someone paid quite a bit of money for it, so take care of it.

I think otterbox is working on a "Tandum" series for sliders like the Droid and pre.

When you say "unless it is open" how much effort is there to open the case to slide the keyboard out? Would one have to take the case off or?

I'm assuming he means that he has to take the case off first then you can use the slide out keyboard.

Hmmm that's cool i suppose. But why couldn't they just get rid of the hinge and allow the top to snap on with tabs or come as a two piece that locks together in the middle?

That way the droid could slide open with out any 'door opening'. If it did that, I'd buy it.
