OK so the reason I think it's shady is I think they stole a ROM or smth but I hope not
here's the reason I started thinking about it:

Screenshot 2025-01-04 3.21.28 PM.png
and this:
from monkey crash adb:

// Build Label: SUNMAX/Sunmax_Model_Tab_10/Sunmax_Model_Tab_10:12/SP1A.210812.016/27346:user/release-keys

from adb -d shell getprop | grep "build" adb:

so idk if they stole a ROM from a "SUNMAX Model Tab 10" or smth

Welcome to Android Central! It's not unusual for these no-name/off-brand devices to use the same firmware from another device. Chances are it's the same manufacturer anyway. That in itself wouldn't make me worried about shadiness -- but these off-brand devices in general make me cautious about entering any sensitive data, since there's always the worry about their apps sending data back to unknown servers somewhere in China or elsewhere ...

No, mention of specs, but for $75 they are likely as old or older than the OS. It would be a hard pass from me.

I couldn't even find the manufacturer's website (I tried looking for the SunMax, and I at least found a site, but it wasn't much better. That site was so shady, I think I need to do a scan in all honesty). I can almost guarantee what @B. Diddy suggested is close to the truth. There is some kind of ROM sharing going on.

Another example would be Tinno -- they're a big Chinese ODM (original design manufacturer) that builds devices for other (typically Chinese) companies. A fair number of these off-brand devices will identify themselves as Tinno.

For me it's 50 bucks on amazon.
also I can put specs once I get them
EDIT: these seem to be popular and found another one on amazon here

Still a hard pass for me for all the reasons posted above.
If I were looking for a dedicated music player I'd go with a refurbished iPod classic for about $150 instead. At least then I wouldn't be as worried about shady software practices of the manufacturer or reseller.

I already have an ipod classic but I just want Spotify and other music streaming services.

I guess I can kind of understand why you would want a different device for an mp3 player, but why not repurpose an older phone that you already own for this?
