Shall we talk about FPS placement

Correct, which means it's not your favorite for your very specific and rate use case, but that doesn't make it 'dumb period'.
Dumb is as dumb does. Everyone's opinion is based on their own very specific set of likes and dislikes. I'm only guessing that there are other users who actually use wallet cases or who actually have their phones on surfaces from time to time and I'm only guessing that they have to work around using a back fps if they use one of those popular phones that have em on the back. Working around things doesn't mean they were sensible in the first place, just means somebody didn't make it perfect in the first place, period. Given that, it's always going to be a compromise but I wonder how many people, if given the chance, would have the fps on the front of their popular phones and not have to work around it? The overwhelming opinion in these forums in the lead up to note 7 seems to have been that people wanted it on the front, embedded in the screen and we're disappointed to see final specs....now they have to work around it. The overwhelming opinions of reviewers about placement on S8 & S8+ was....dumb position, an afterthought, high up on back - and they suggested that lower down would have been preferable. Preferable, not ideal. Ideal is on the front....end of blog😊

I definitely get what you're saying. My self, I've passed on phones I considered because of the FPS being on the front lower bezel. I know for sure I'm in the minority with that.

Y don't you like fps on lower front? Just intrigued?

I don't like the FPS location and not the easiest compared to majority of phones. But you get used to it pretty quickly. Do I prefer it in that location? Probably not, but not hard to get used to the location and not a deal breaker IMO based on using it on S8 and S8+.

Its actually not that bad on the S8 I kinda like it better on the back. So much easier when driving. The Note 8 however because the phone is long we shall see but I think we all will get used to it

Im sure I'll get used to it real quick. I had the same concerns with the S8 and it worked out well.

Someone posted that the S9 design is probably finalised now. Does everyone think that Sammy will do the rear FPS the same again as the S8/Note 8 or redesigned like other Android phones? I.e., in the middle, lower down and physically larger, rounder.

i had talked my self out of getting the note 8, just because of the placement of the FP Scanner (do not like in on my S8), however with the $420 discount for Note 7 owners i may get one anyway.

No, they didn't have time to change it. They weren't going to redesign the phone.

People hated the FPS location on the S8/+ so much that millions and millions of people bought the phone.

I absolutely hate the position of the fingerprint sensor on the S8, and I still purchased one.

You just posted a logical fallacy. Just because people purchased the S8s doesn't mean the liked the position of the FPS on the S8s.

Because before the announcement/release of the S8, they had to decide to abandon the under glass sensor and go with plan B before going into production... they probably could have made the time to redesign the Note 8 too if they decided to abandon it all together for 2017.

And current rumor was that since Apple may not be bringing under glass FPS either to iPhone 8 that Samsung has already decided to go with the rear sensor again for the S9. If they had started on redesign on the Note 8 button back then, then they will be ahead of game for S9 design. OMGoodness it will be such a disappointment if they don't take the effort to put the FPS in a better spot in the S9... absolutely no excuse.

Apple supposedly had a few variations of iPhone 8 testing before they made final decision of which phone to go with into production... Samsung could easily have done the same if they wanted to plan smart.

I know once I get my Note 8, I'll have 14 days to return it. If the iPhone 8 has a better fingerprint sensor location, I may very well purchase that instead and return the Note 8 just to get a better FPS location.

People hated it but they still bought the phone. Makes sense lol. They didn't speak with their wallet and boycott the design so why would Samsung do a redesign with the Note when they raked in billions in sales and profits?

Read the forums, here and many other places. People hated the placement of the FPS location on the S8s, but they still loved many other things about the device.

And round and round we go...

It's not an idea placement. If that's a deal breaker don't buy the phone.

If it's not, buy the phone and get use to using it.

Is it really that complicated?

Did I read somewhere that apple were ditching the fps altogether?

The forum represents near 0% of phone buyers so that's irrelevant.

Samsung could care less what people on the forum think about the FPS. They care about the sales of the S8/+, which were tremendous. So if that many people bought the phone with that FPS placement, they knew having it in a similar location would be a non issue.

People will dislike the FPS sensor but no doubt many still chose to buy it... because it's not an absolute deal breaker if they like the rest of the phone.

But I can say this without doubt there were people that probably liked the phone a lot, but they decided not to buy the phone and go elsewhere because of the FPS. There will probably be many that didn't buy because of the curved glass, size, or other reasons... price... but we will never know.

I like the Note 8... I hate the FPS... but it's not a deal breaker. It only becomes a deal breaker when you find another phone that you like as much and comes down to the + and - of each.

Samsung will sell it's millions... it still dominates the Android market so it's a given for now. But people have not loved it that much to compete with iPhone numbers yet or maintain pricing power all year like them... iPhone barely budge in price all year while most others start discounting in months to generate the numbers they do... one model vs one model.

iPhones hold value because there's no competition in that ecosystem. Samsung has a ton of competition in the Android ecosystem. There is no similar comparison to be made.

There is always going to be a feature on every single phone ever made that's going to keep a certain segment from buying it and going with a competitor.

If the FPS on the Note 8 were in the absolute perfect location(which is impossible) there would always be something else... Like the battery... Or Touchwiz/SE... On and on.

I agree that we don't represent the masses. One of my friends with an S8+ got his phone and never once mentioned the FPS. He was dazzled by the fact that Samsung included so many ways to unlock his phone.

We overthink everything . Most people do not.

It would be nice to have in the front, but the tech isn't there yet to imbed in the screen and I'd rather have as much real estate on the front as possible be used for screen so to the back the sensor goes. Once it's on the back I don't really care where it is.

The back sensor on my S8 is only mildly inconvenient in two situations: when laying flat on a surface I have to pick up the phone, and when mounted in my car reaching around to the back is awkward.
