It’s not a section of branch. It’s some sort of camouflage worm.
Did you take this in portrait mode ? It’s strange that it’s out of focus (a lot) on either side of the little guy.

I took several photos of him. It's a stick Caterpillar. He was moving along until we came by, then he did that . I dont recall if it was portrait mode for sure or not.

I've been consistently pleased with the pictures I can take with the Note 8 for almost a year now. Unless I can justify a Note 9 this'll continue to be my trusty companion.

We'll miss you around these parts, Mr. Hogg. If you think about it after you get your Note 9, consider taking pics with it of some of the same places you've posted in this thread that were taken with your Note 8, and put the N8 and N9 pics up side-by-side here so we can see the differences. Since we'll all know your excellent technique will be the same, we'll therefore know that the only difference between the pics will be the result of the phones' cameras.
