It seems much easier to use a third party launcher. I use Nova and like it because it remembers my layout

The app drawer is in the ^ thing, similar to how it is for the Pixel Launcher.

Yes, just swipe up on the dock opens the app draw. I'm using Version 5 Beta 8.0. Very stable. Only problem I have found is the arrow sometimes drops down on top of the middle icon.

Got bored with the green, so I changed it up a bit with some browns and oranges. Wish I had an emui theme to match.

Said bye bye to the default launcher and hello to Action Launcher for that Pixel minimalist look! Not sure why no one ever mentioned that you can hide apps on Action Launcher too.

Hmm interesting. I will reexplore Nova sometime, never knew that. I really wanted the Pixel launcher arrow thing though so I'll do that eventually.
