Trying to understand the silence is deafening. As a potential customer I am not very happy today. Phones have been a round a long time, there are not too many new things that would delay a launch that we do not already know. I keep being told they are working on a document that will explain everything....really. UGHHHHH

Yes how many days or weeks does it take to write an email? Good news or bad news they need to send something out today. Even if we could order today most won't get it till next week.

Just got this email from Andy...

Hi (Modifier),

I personally wanted to thank you for putting your name down for our first phone. We've been hard at work getting everything ready and the good news is that we’re now going through certification and testing with multiple US and international carriers.

You might be getting impatient to get your hands on your new Essential Phone (and I’m also impatient to get it to you!) but rest assured that you will have a device in your hands in a few weeks.

In the meantime, give us a shout out using #thisisessential to show the team that sweating the details and working long hours to get this device shipped is worth it.

Got the same email at both my registered email addresses.. I am still on the fence but am leaning towards passing on it. I'll wait and see how close we are to the Pixel 2 if and when I get the actual order email from Essential.

Another deciding factor for me will be if non glossy is offered. If out the gate it's glossy only then my interest level drops to zero..

Probably the second or third week in August if "a few" is taken literally. I'm personally fine with that since it's more of a known than we had before. A few weeks will go quick.

Got the same. This is good news but at the same time very underwhelming. Seems rumours were that we would hear an explanation for the lack of communication from them. If this is it I'm surprised it took that long to write such a generic message that got sent to everyone.

Essential might be approaching it like Apple. Either you buy it or you don't. The details in between don't really matter.

For me this is huge. I can stop checking their Twitter feed and forums daily for news. It's one less thing to think about for a few weeks. lol :D

so you'll get your phone in almost September while the iPhone 8 and pixel 2 launches are just a "few weeks" or so away. I think waiting would be smart to compare to those others especially the pixel

While I appreciate the communication, unfortunately for me, it's too little too late. As I said elsewhere, my phone died the other day and I need a new phone now. I was willing to wait a few more days, but this email telling me it could be a few more weeks means it's not reasonable to wait and I have to do something now. And if I have to do something now, I'm not going to bother with half measures and get a low end phone that's as bad as what I had previously.

Now I just have to decide what to get instead of the Essential PH-1.

Both the S8 and G6 are pretty cheap now that the hype has died down. I saw them this morning for $575 and $499 respectively, both unlocked. Downside is the S8 is supposedly easy to scratch/break and LG is slow to update OS builds.

Got my eye on both those as well as the Pixel XL and a couple others. Basically they all have positives and negatives and there's not really a clear winner.

I like the look and size of the G6 and the fact that I can put an SD card in it, but the support concerns me. The S8/+ has top notch specs, the latest processor and a nice camera, but the S7 was slow to get the latest version of Android, and I'm really not crazy about the curved glass on the front. The Pixel XL has the previous processor in it, but has a pretty nice camera and should get at least the next two versions of Android fairly quickly. However, it's almost a year old already, will soon be replaced and the price doesn't reflect that at all. It also lacks SD support. So yeah, not an easy decision to make. Not that the Essential PH-1 was all sunshine and rainbows, but it was a somewhat new and interesting concept in a great looking phone.

I took a chance on the Samsung S8 and it was a nightmare dealing with service. They have THE worst service I have experienced since trying to cancel America Online 20 years ago! ;)

The Essential Phone is now the only mobile that might migrate me off iOS to Android.

I wouldn't buy a Pixel now just because it's currently overpriced for being approaching a year old.

If I had to choose something today, I'd either go G6 if buying new or I'd buy something cheap to get me by a few weeks.

Good to know that about Samsung. I almost bought an S8 myself. Instead I took a shot on the BlackBerry KEYone since the PH-1 was delayed. It had its own issues, both in software and hardware, and was returned this week. I'm back on an old phone until a PH-1 finally lands on my desk.

Same as you, nothing else is on my radar. I'm not interested in "yet another aluminum slab" design like the rest.

I liked the S8. Terrific phone (though I should have grabbed the Plus). The issue was the trade-in program scandal so I decided I wasn't going to take a chance. Had they handled the returns efficiently I wouldn't have said "To heck with Samsung, forever."

Personally G6 with SD 821, only 32 GB storage, not that great skin is a no go for me even with huge discounts. Any phone I buy in 2017 should have minimum SD 835, 64 GB internal storage. Obviously I'm not taking into consideration cost, and for those who say you can't make out difference between SD 821 and 835, may be but when I pay hundreds of dollars I don't mind paying a few hundred more for having the latest specs, decent internal storage which I consider base of 64 GB (don't like or care about micro SD).

S8, U11, OP5 are phones I would recommend if someone says I want to buy a phone today.

If I needed something affordable right now I'd buy the Moto G5 Plus with 64/4. You can get it new on eBay for under 300
