Should I consider doing a factory reset on my phone?

Phone lags and screen shakes.

Yeah, so my phone and lags and the screen shakes. Should I do a factory reset? If yes, then how to backup apps, contacts and settings?

Turn off all the haptic feedback and touch sounds. It does wonders for the responsiveness.

What do you mean the screen shakes? Does the image flicker?

Try booting into Recovery and wiping the cache partition, which won't erase any personal data. The process may take up to 10 minutes on the Nexus 5, so be patient. http://forums.androidcentral.com/nexus-5-rooting-roms-hacks/352008-guide-nexus-5-recovery.html

It's hard to describe, really. It flickers and shakes and there's a lot of lag.
