AC Question

I picked up my phone in the morning (I hadn't used it all night and had put on charge so it would be fully charged in the morning) and it was hot and it's battery was only 73%. I put it on charge in the car on my way to work but it said battery temperature too high that it could not charge. So, I took the battery out to let it cool for about 30 minutes. When I put the battery back in it was on 1%, said battery critically low, started to get hot and died. After my phone was dead for over an hour, it got really and abnormally hot even though it was dead. I put it on charge again so maybe I could turn it on but after an entire afternoon my phone still wouldn't turn on. Is it just the battery or do I need to get a new phone?
