Should I have ordered my Pixel XL 2 through Project Fi Site?

On the 4th I order an unlocked black Pixel XL 2 via the Pixel pre-order page in the Google store. I want to use this phone with Project Fi.

Today I checked the Project Fi page and I see the Pixel XL 2 and Pixel 2 are out of stock. However they are still available to pre-order through the Google store preorder page.

Did I make a mistake?

Or when I get my Pixel XL 2 do I just order Google Fi service and they send me a sim card?

You are fine, they are the same phone. Order service and they will get you in somehow. With this eSIM thing going on they might not even have to ship a SIM.

Go on the Fi website. I think there is a box to check for Pixel 2 eSIM signup. i'd call/chat with them.

I see on the Project Fi site I can order a SIM card. Should I be ordering one soon. Pixel should arive at the end of the month.

The options at Project Fi site:

Order a new Project Fi SIM (free)
We'll ship it to you free

Bringing a Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL
Ready with a Fi-compatible eSIM

I am confused. What is the difference in the google store phone and the Project Fi phone. Must be something because the Project Fi is out of stock, notify when available.

Phones from Fi and Google store are the same. Likely different stock allocations, which is why availability differs.

For Fi, you shouldn't need a SIM as it will utilise the eSIM. As the other poster said, give them a call or have a chat. They'll get you sorted out.
