Should I order the Nexus 5?

Hello, I have been on Windows Phone for the past 3 years now and well to be honest I have had enough. But I have been looking around and came across the Nexus 5 it looks like a really sweet device and is really pushing me to move to Android! But I would like a few questions answered before I purchase it!



What is the speed like, can it run and open apps fast?

With the 16GB version will that be enough? I don't plan to be putting music on the device.

Can all Apps run on the device?

What is the battery life like?

Yes, yes, yes, and it depends. I get pretty good battery life on mine but others say they get average to poor battery performance. There's only one way you can find out! I say go for it.

No. hang on and wait another 45 days and get the Nexus X (6).

The Nexus X (not Nexus 6) will be released around Halloween without an announcement

I really hope those specs are wrong. 5.9 inch display is a no go for me. I'm also a little disappointed its made by Motorola and not LG.

Right, that's the thing, I wish they'd have kept it no larger than 5".

I've had my Nexus 5 for four months and I like it. I noticed today the price had dropped about $150 USD since I bought mine. I live in Mexico. I like to buy one step below cutting edge for the price break.

I don't play games on my Nexus 5 and I don't listen to music. All the apps I've downloaded work fine. I've had a few I uninstalled because I didn't like them but they worked.

Many people complain about the battery. As I said, I don't play games, I don't play music, and I don't have a problem. Probably my most intense use was during a road trip from Oaxaca to the Yucatan. I was texting a lot telling people I was fine and I was constantly checking Google Maps. I had no battery problem but I charged it each evening.

I had a Samsung S4 mini and gave it to my nephew. It had the Samsung version of android. I prefer the Nexus 6. My first phone was a Nokia with Windows 8 and I didn't like it.

Battery on wifi is excellent. Battery on data... Meh. Greatly depends on the signal strength. Otherwise, I bought mine in February and it flies just like new. I bought the 32 gb version.

Should you buy it? Well, we all did and most of us are happy.
Some say the battery life is crap. I can't concur with this. My phone is used frequently and I got Bluetooth permanently on (for my Blue-And-Me Car System), Wifi permanently on (got a fast wifi at home), data permanently on (got a fast data plan), use Twitter, Facebook, Mail, Calender, Google+, Ingress, Maps, Google Now Search etc ... a lot.
I have 6 mailaccounts (2 of them on push).
I use two radio apps and "Phone Scheduler" to start one of them in the morning every workday and wake me up.
I use Hangouts as SMS app.
Else, my Nexus5 32GB is stock and not rooted.

I get over a day easily on one charge. Last saturday I didn't touch it much and forgot to put it on charge in the evening. Next morning (10 a.m.) it still had 78% battery ...

So no, I can't say I got battery problems.

But the next Nexus is at the horizon. If you got dough, you can wait and get the new one. If you have to look at your budget, I would seize the opportunity to get one of the last new Nexus 5 devices very cheap ...

Not IMO...I would get the 32 gig version.

Can all Apps run on the device?

Yes. But thats true of any Android phone.

What is the battery life like?

Slightly less than an iPhone. I can go a full day without charging. It also has wireless charging which helps a lot. I never think about battery life anymore.

I'd wait a couple of months. The Nexus X is due to be announced at the end of October. The rumors are that the X (or what ever it will be called) will have a 5.2" QHD screen, 3G of RAM and a Snapdragon 805 processor which will make it one hell of a device. On the other had the Nexus 5 is still a great phone and I would expect to see some fairly deep discounts on it when the X is announced.

If you just look at the Nexus 5 on it's own merits, rather than comparing it to it's sucessor, it's a really great device. The 1080p screen is sharp and clear and big enough that you can do all of your reading on it, I completely stopped using my Nexus 7 tablet when I got the N5. The WiFi is 802.11ac which is as good as it gets for now, I've benchmarked it at 270MBits/second to my network using iperf. That's faster than any Internet connection unless you have Google Fibre. The camera is excellent, other phones supposedly have better cameras but I've been extremely happy with the picture that the N5 takes. The battery life does suck, however the N5 has Qi charging so that's much less of a problem that you might think. In addition to a couple of Qi charging pads that I have in the house I also have a Qi car mount attached to my dash and a Qi battery pack that can charge the phone in my pocket. The Qi car mount is a huge convienience because you can use the N5 as a GPS and still arrive with a full battery. The lack of wires means thatall you have to do is pop it in or out of the mount, it becomes something that you do automatically.

In defense of the battery, I only have sucky battery on cell data and even then if I'm using the phone lightly I can get maybe 12 hours on a charge (or more). It has to do with how you'll use your phone.
