Why do we have to adjust routers to not use ipv6...shouldn't this phone just work. What if this affects someone else's device in my household. Just curious and a little angry that this is causing so many issues.

Yes, it should just works, when you see suggestions to turn this off is not for a permanent solution, is to bring a temporary solution until people begin reporting the issue with the carriers/Samsung and a patch is created to fix the issue.

But to answer your other concern, no, it shouldn't affect anybody else's device in your home as it's just using an older but still 100% functional IP protocol.

It's called growing pains. As recently as 12 years ago, you couldn't send an MMS from one carrier to another. There were plenty of situations in which a carrier wouldn't hand off a call to another carrier - call the phone sitting right on your desk and get a "phone isn't on the system" indication. Cellphones will be fully standardized (hmmm, let me grind my more than 70 year old "calculator" here) in about 35-50 years. (We'll have other problems, but the ones we have now will have been fixed.)
