My goodness! How frightening! Hope you are okay!

Thanks, ya all good. It was about 20 miles west. It was on the ground for 30 minutes and a F1 tornader and it only flatened 2 homes and damaged i think it was 8 others. Amazing cause theres quite a bit of population over there.

So glad that you and your family are okay and that it didn't do too much damage - especially since it looked like a pretty intense storm!

It finally blooms again! Now will they turn blue? Our Hibiscus (edit: hydrangea, thanks y'all!) seems to not want to bloom most years. Any green thumbs here with experience?

My wife says that looks like a hydrangea. Said they don't bloom because they need to be pruned back.

I knew I should have asked my wife before I posted that - I can never remember which it is because we've had both. She's tried both pruning and not pruning with the same results. It's frustrating. The last time it bloomed she didn't do anything.

My mom has one of those. She's had it for 4 years, but it never produces flowers, just green leaves. She has pruned it and not pruned it. She said that she is going to dig it out and replace it if it doesn't bloom this year.

Good to know we're at least not alone. I wonder if the prior year's climate affects it. We have a sweet gum (stupid evil tree!) that bloomed a gorgeous pinkish orange one year, but most years it's just yellow and dull orange in the 23 years we've lived here.

Those are hydrangea and they need to be fertilized to bloom. To get the deep blue or blue-purple color in the flowers the plant food needs to be rich in iron (my folks used iron filings). I remember those from decades ago as a kid growing up in my folks home.

Iron filings? Heck I have a bunch of sheetmetal grinding dust in the garage from restoration work on my car that I could put out there - how did they apply the filings?

Add a level tablespoon or so of iron dust to some plant food and spread around the base of the plant. You DON'T want any large or sharp pieces of metal in your soil!

Also, remember, IRON, not steel, stainless steel, aluminum or other metal. Or, just pick up some iron rich fertilizer at a local nursery.
