This is weird.

when i first got the phone i could shut down the phone by pressing and holding the power button, to power it back on i would just press the power button.

now, when i shut the phone down,
pressing the power button doesnt turn it back on, nor does holding the power button. I have to remove and replace the battery, THEN press the power button, then it'll come on..

wtf?
i dont want to get into the habit of removing that back cover in fear of bending it

I've noticed that sometimes it may take up to a minute for it to be able to be turned back on. Try it again, and wait 30 to 60 seconds before trying to turn it back on without removing the battery.

This happened to me before. Ultimately I did a hard reset to resolve the issue and though that it was actually Android crashing while it was shutting down. I thought this because when I would hit Shut Down and then charge the phone, it used to charge, but when I hit shut down during the period of time where I couldn't power it back w/out removing the battery, the charge light wouldn't come on. I don't think the thing ever properly really turned off.

I just thought it was some kind of app I installed.

Since I've hard reset I haven't put any task or any other type of auto management type of software back on, I figure I wouldn't do this until I needed to. For now, trust in Android. :)

Mine takes about 30 to 60 seconds after turning off before I can turn it back on, as ReproOne said as well.

This happened to me, I plugged the phone into my computer and it made noise, telling me the phone was still on, I waited a few minuted, the phone finally turned off (it looked off the whole time) and it would turn back on.

I had this happen the first couple of times I shut it down and immediately tried to power it back up. Can't recall how long I waited the third time to get it to work properly.

You don't have to wait 90 seconds or pull your battery. The secret is pushing the power button for the right about of time to turn it on then letting go of it and waiting a couple seconds. If you hold it too long it won't work because it then shuts itself off before it goes on and if you hold it too short a time it won't go on. It takes seconds or 2 to start booting up and some people think it didn't start and press the button again which shuts it off!

I had the same problem and was ready to swap out my EVO but now it works 100% of the time. It's in the timing of pressing the button. The "hold down" time is VERY sensitive. It's longer than a quick push and release and shorter than counting to 2.

I GUARANTEE that if you do it correctly you won't have a problem.
