Signal Strength not accurate . . . or other issue?

Today I was sitting in a parking lot with some time on my hands, so I tried to get on the web. The phone showed 6 bars on the signal indicator (sometimes dropping to 5). It also showed 3G, with the little arrows lighting up to show a live connection. But, I couldn't even get Google's simple mobile homepage to fully load. I tried several different websites, most of which I had viewed earlier in the day from a different location. Nothing would load more than a bit of background, or a part of a header.

I called Sprint to see if it might be a network problem. Nope. Nothing was wrong on their end.

I tried changing some settings - roaming, data, CDMA, etc. Nothing mattered. In the 40 - 50 minutes I was trying, the phone got very warm (almost alarmingly so), and the battery went from 70% to 40%.

The strange thing was that while I was on the phone to Sprint, the signal meter only showed 2 - 3 bars. I assume that was a much more accurate measure of the signal I was getting. But, when I hung up with Sprint and went back to data, it shot back up to a full 6 bars.

Oh, and I tried power cycling the phone and even pulling the battery. Nothing changed it.

It's a Sprint Tower issue, not the phone. The phone is working hard to send/recieve data to no avail which causes excessive heat build up. Don't believe the CS BS, Sprint is having tower/network problems everywhere. Hopefully they will get the network upgrades done soon because it's beyond rediculous how slow 3G is. Prepaid service works much better right now.
