after reading some posts under the search "signal strength" i am more confused. Can someone help me understand these numbers and the meaning?

My signal strength at this moment reads -88 dBm , sometimes its less sometimes more. Is this good or not? what would a good reading be?

thanks

i don't think i have seen that reading much lower or higher for that matter.

thanks

-88 dBm is normal... Verizon has been having issues for a while because of unknown reasons. Also some people have had worse signal since the Google Play Download.. Hope time heals this! I will also post a reply with what I watched a Verizon rep do on my thunderbolt that put me on a separate bandwidth tower. It is made for the Smart Phones that need he wider bandwidth to function better. They don't usually tell people but this shows that if you are nice and make them talk to you for a while then you can learn some secrets:)

I don't know if this will help at all but try this..
Dial ##778#
Select Edit Mode
Password: 000000
Select: Modem Settings
Select: Rev A.
Select: Enable.
Hit: OK.
Hit: menu button.
Hit: Commit Modifications.
Hit yes to restart.

What this will do is put you on a seperate 3g/4g tower made for smart phones with larger bandwidth that is needed. This was origanally made for the HTC Thunderbolt but it also works with some other 4g Verizon devices.

-Good Luck :)

what if I don't have 4 g in my area is that going to be in issue if I change those settings

That's a relatively good signal. A very strong signal would be more in the -50 to -70 dbm range (remember since we're in negative numbers, closer to zero equals better stronger signal). A weak signal would be something closer to -100. The more it goes over -100 (ex. -120), the signal is pretty weak and can cause connection issues.

Not sure how the Google Play store update has anything to do with signal strength. First I've ever heard of it.

That Verizon rep was blowing smoke up your skirt. All it really does is force the phone to use the older 3G network protocol instead of the newer eHRPD (eHRPD is basically a bridge between the LTE and 3G networks). So, this will not set you up on any special tower for better bandwidth. The only time this would be of use is during an LTE outage that also tends to cause problems with eHRPD that could prevent an LTE device from falling back to or obtaining 3G service. Otherwise, there really isn't any advantage to setting it to Rev A.
