Signal strength

Has anyone felt the antenna is not great in this phone? Only had this phone for less than a week and switched from Nextel, but we already had to get an Airave for the office. Other areas the signal strength jumps all over and calls dropped or not received. Even with the Airave we see the signal jump all over.

I would say it's neither good nor bad, just kind of meh. My previous phone, the Palm Pre, had a much better antenna (that was the only thing better about it than the Shift).

I like the phone, besides getting use to Android over BB, but hard on business when you can't keep a call.

Thanks for the response GT.

Funny story about how I determined the Shift's antenna was very average. There's a particular bathroom at work that is very small (single occupancy) and built with cinder block walls. With my Pre, I could get a weak signal when using the john, but my Shift can't get a signal in there. :(

There is a new PRL out have you guys tried updating your PRL? I just updated mine so its to early for me to tell if it helps. My Wife still has my OG EVO so I have tested in a few spots nether one has a stringer signal one over the other

Just did the update, will have to see if there is any improvement. It seams like my bosses phone is worse than mine, I'll update his in the morning.

PRL update does nothing for signal strength. It just tells your phone what to do when there's no Sprint signal. The only way it would improve things here is if there's a new VZW tower it can use.

i have definitely noticed a lack of signal strength.
my home is in a crappy area, so i have the Airvana. i noticed that when I had a protective case on it, i was constantly roaming within my own house. now that i've taken off the case, i no longer roam within my own house (thank god)

sadly, i think i found the deathgrip for the ES4G: if the back area of the phone around the HTC logo and camera is blocked by something, i see an immediate 2-3 bar drop in wifi and signal.

I was doing the same thing the other day. Seemed like if I held the phone with some fingers up around the volume button area the signal dropped off. If I slid my hand down and held it more near the bottom of the phone while talking it was better.

My boss seems to losing calls frequently when a call waiting comes in. Not sure if it's a signal issue or another all together. Problem is you don't realize there is no one there until the keypad is locked and then you need to unlock it to hit the "dismiss" error message.

See if this happens to any of you:

Holding phone and signal drop - PPCGeeks

(if posting a link to another forum is against the rules I'll remove it...just trying to save time and not repost the pictures). I wonder if something is wrong with my Shift because only 2 people said they had the same issue as me and others said there was no issue at all. Of course it depends on where the tower is too and whether you're in a building, etc.

Had the same issue with the Evo. Signal all over but then they did a radio update and it was quite a bit better. Here's hoping for a radio firmware upgrade that helps. Oh, and PRL is a roaming tower list. Won't help unless you ARE roaming.

Is there a way to make HTC aware of these issues, or do we rely they review these forums?

I will do some more testing in weaker signal areas but so far I am not seeing this issue on my Shift.

I'm really interested in this issue. I had a LG Optimus S that I had a terrible time getting reception in certain areas and the phone would go into roam (the phone was reading -115dbm). My work Blackberry works fine (showed -113 dbm) as did my wifes EVO (I could not find a dbm reading on it). I really like the smaller size of the Shift, but would be very unhappy if I have the same issues with it as I did with the Optimus.

That's interesting, I got an Optimus for my son and I thought that it appeared to hold the signal well compared to the Pre I had at the time. Once I got the shift it appeared to me to fare about the same or maybe a little worse than my Pre. This was a very unscientific observation of the bars not the db's and seeing when the phones dropped service through an area I drive with a signal which ranges from weak to non existent.
