Silent/vibrate mode to control app volume

I am probably missing some obvious way to put the phone in silent mode. Putting it in vibrate or silent mode does not mute game volume
Do I have to dig in sound settings everytime I want to play a game at work?

Hold the power button like you would when shutting the phone off, when the prompt screen comes up there is sound off in the bottom left corner. See if that works

Won't holding the down volume rocker switch, down until the device vibrates accomplish the same thing?

use powertoggles, its got a widget to control media volume (vs sys volume).
