SIM card question

Just a quick question, my SIM card has a PIN protection on it. Does this mean that the SIM card is encrypted?

In any case, I save all my contacts to the phone’s internal storage and that is encrypted by default.

It's there to prevent people putting your SIM into a phone and using it...

In my opinion it's mostly a legacy feature that's been hanging around since the late 90s/early 2000s. At this stage it's largely useless.

Why is it useless?

Since I don’t store any of my contacts on the SIM card, can I turn the SIM LOCK off?
