Skype calls muffled with headset

I'm getting complaints of sounding very muffled to users on the other end when using my wired headset to make skype calls.

I'm using iPhone earbuds with mic.

The same wired headset with regular dialed calls seems to work fine.

Skype calls on my network using an iPod touch and headset seem to work fine.

Anyone else using skype like this? Would a different headset help?

I could be wrong but I believe the ohms on the iphone headset is not compatible with non-apple devices.
