Skype Now Available!!!

I tested this on my gbdebloat rom and it is working
tb --> iphone video chat

I wish the video wasn't still rotated. I would rather
have the tb to sit in portrait mode. anyone know of
a fix for this....besides putting it into landscape mode lol.

but I can deal w/ an official release :)

From what I understand, there's no official api for front facing camera access in Froyo. It wasn't added until Gingerbread. So any app that utilizes the ffc has to be written for specific phones based on how the manufacturers allowed access to the front camera. That's probably why Skype didn't bother to support the ffc on the Thunderbolt until Gb comes out.

Skype video without ffc = fail

Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt with built in auto-restart and auto-shut-down features!

the incoming video quality does not seem as good as it had been with leaked version that came out a few months ago but then was killed with the most recent update. i called the same person with their same computer and camera and it was definitely not as sharp as before. i turned off my video to see if it would improve the quality but it was still fuzzy. i wonder if this new version was deigned to minimize the data usage for the carriers. "yes, you can now make a skype video call, but the quality is terrible"

yes the front facing part is a limit of froyo, I have read it on multiple sites, I dont know the details, I am not a software engineer, so I can not tell you, but something with the way froyo handles the the FFC
Again, it is NOT a limitation of Froyo. There was already a leaked version of Skype video chat that worked on the stock Froyo chat on the factory radio and on the MR2 radio. It stopped working with MR2.

It's a limitation of the APIs for Froyo. It can be worked around but it's probably a pain to do.

Not just the "pain" of doing it, but setting a precedent of special-coding for individual devices. I know they do that. But I don't think they love it! :) Especially when it'll be fixed when they rollout GB shortly.

I just checked the release notes for Skype on the android market and the thunderbolt is now supported. I'm rooted with a custom rom so someone should test this.......

But the version of Skype leaked in April (IIRC) already worked on the ThunderBolt with the factory build and with MR1.

Screw Skype. Thanks to a tip in the comments on the Front Page announcement a member here pointed out that ooVoo has been ported to the TBolt. It works great. FFC works. Decent audio and video stays in synch. Tested with my TBolt on a solid LTE connection to my wife's laptop. No complaints here. Your mileage may vary.

You have to go under options and manually check enable camera, if you have already done that then I don't know what else to tell you, sorry.

I had the same issue, deleted Skype and then downloaded the latest ver 2.1.0.46 work but with the rear camera not the front camera so it is a little useless

Thank you Ambushbug! I thought I saw something about that but unsure of how to get to that option. I go into skype or the camera and try to hit the menu to find the options, but haven't found wher I can set that......I am pretty new to Android (long time BB user) any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I just got into the settings of skype and under Video Calls, "Enable video calling" is checked. it also says right below it "Back Camera Only"

To get this version if skype to work right you need the 'mirror accessory' just set your phone next to your new accessory while you are in a skype call and magically you have a useful version of skype!

The $59.95 HTC Mirror Accessory should be available in about 6 months on HTCpedia, but Sedio is expected to have one available in a few weeks for $39.95, but it won't work with the extended battery.
