Sleep of death

This happens to me also...but I seem to have tracked it down to my Rhapsody App. If I never launch Rhapsody, I never get the sleep of death... Anyone else? Do a battery pull, never launch Rhapsody (and end it right away in task manager after power on as it seems to run at start) Then see if you get it. Repeat, but use Rhapsody, and see if you get SoD.

I have heard of lots of things as to the cause. Unfortunately on my phone, even bone stock with no apps, it still does it. I tried it with and without the update. Reset the phone, taped battery, laid it face down, nothing seemed to work.
While perusing the Motorola website, I saw troubleshooting for the photon. The first (and only) problem listed is "The Device is rebooting or keeps turning off by itself" So they know it is an issue. However during a chat session, the rep denied it was a "known" issue.

So
If you need to return your phone, do it, but make sure you start a chat session on Motorola's website to let them know the problem. Returning it to Sprint or the store you bought it may not be giving it the attention it deserves. MOTOROLA NEEDS to ACKNOWLEDGE THIS ISSUE.

I am debating sending it back to Motorola for 5-7 days, or just getting another brand.

Since getting the OTA update, I have not had a SoD......not one.... I am sure by the time I finish typing this, my phone will die....but seriously. Its been good since the update I applied 2 days go.

I have NEVER had this problem UNTIL today. I have both updates (not sure what the latest one was for...just a few days ago).

My phone is not rooted, and I have minimal apps on the phone. I couldn't get it to turn on or anything. Had to pull battery to get phone to restart.

As a long time Palm Pre user and recent Android convert, I am going to try to let the speed and other features outweigh the issues. THe thing is, I need my phone to be ON when I think it is on. I can't be checking my phone every minute to see that it hasn't shut off.

I need reliability first and foremost.

I know that there are a number of theories about what causes the sleep of death. I've gone through two phones and observed a number of different circumstances. I have seen, in other places, a suggestion that is similar to the one here about putting tape on your battery, and that is use a slightly wadded up post-it note (or similar) to reduce the possibility that your battery will shift in its compartment.

Regarding heating, yes, very frequently the phone gets warm, but my experience is that this happens AFTER entering sleep of death mode. To be clear, it doesn't always seem to get warm, but I know that when my phone is in my pocket (or even just sitting on my desk) and it seems warm that it won't wake-up without a battery-pull.

Also, to be clear, the battery-stuffing does not work 100% of the time, but it has reduced the battery-pulling from predictably 3-5 times a day to 1-2 times a week, demonstrable and repeatable, so I think it has something to do with some insufficient margins of error in the battery compartment or in the battery connector area.

Your mileage may vary.

Cheers!

I just exchanged my device for new one and have not had the issue since. I have had the new device since Saturday.
