Slightly Nervous

I'm a bit nervous that I'm putting the Epic up on a pedestal. Over the past few weeks it seems that I've been placing more and more faith into this being THE phone for me. I think reality is it's not that much better then what's currently offered. I've been reading reports of the phone slowing to a crawl and that makes me quite nervous (yes I've also read the speculation of how that shouldn't effect the Epic). The GPS issue isn't a deal breaker but it also has me a bit hesitant.

I'm not sure if Sprint is delaying launch in order to have issues straightened or what... I'm one of those pull the trigger kind of guys. All this wait is killing me.

Get an EVO then, or switch to t-mobile. If I didn't have a stout preference for a physical keyboard being a pre owner and lover of webos i would get the t-mobile galaxy in a heart beat. Lack of a flash camera would be my only gripe.

I had an EVO for a day. I'm actually on AT&T. I left for a day (launch day) to try the EVO and wasn't impressed. I understand that there has been updates since then but I'm still not impressed with the benchmarks I'm seeing out of that phone.

The lack of Flash is a serious gripe of mine. That's one of my main complaints about my 3Gs. Crappy as the pictures may be with a flash they beat the dark crap I get without a flash at all.

I also tried the Droid X, and the iPhone 4 for a day each. Neither of which impressed me enough to keep them. Droid X was probably the coolest but I don't like touch screens. I'm a stickler for spelling and attempt to use proper grammar. Touch screens end up making me look like an idiot. Also for whatever reason my Droid X wouldn't load websites.

Not big on touch screens, but own the 3GS????

I never said I liked my phone. I bought it because it was the most advanced device at the time. It's my first iPhone and aside from the user friendliness I'm not really a fan.

I'm in the same boat as you. I currently own the Palm Pre, and while it's a nice phone, I'm not thrilled with it. I'm currently torn between the EVO and the EPIC. When the Epic's released, I'll just test them both.

+1
At least we'll have 30 days to back out if it's an Epic disappointment (praying for the contrary though).

I gave back my EVO but are you going to like any phone !?!?

I get what the OP is saying though. I've used my gf's iphone, and while it's great, the touch keyboard is a tad annoying for those who care about placing commas, apostrophes, etc. The iphone also doesn't have widgets. This makes the phone... boring, especially if you care about having some data instantly.
I had bet with the Palm Pre, but while it does multitasking beautifully, there's a lot of limitations. For example, if you load up Pandora and the web browser you can't really load any other apps due to an annoying memory leak issue and not enough RAM.

There should be a phone out there that can satisfy my wants/needs. I absolutely loved my Blackberry Bold for typing and the customizable aspects of it. Unfortunately it lacked a proper browser. Then came along the iPhone and with the amazing browser these things called apps came along. Aside from the phone being on lockdown the iPhone does very well.

Now here we are a couple years later and this appears to be a device that integrates my favorite aspects of multiple devices. Am I asking too much?

Actually, the iphone had NOTHING new other than a capacitive screen and a big one at that.

The "apps" you speak of- even the icon based user interface was ripped right off of 15 year old PALM Treos/Pilots. Even an app store on device existed on the Treo and other phones long before the iphone.

All they did was ditch the stylus and simplified (REMOVED actually) about 1/2 of the menus that made the lemmings confused when they used a real smartphone.

Now us power users are still waiting for a modern phone to do what our 10 year old tech did. (Bitter Palm user still waiting for Palm Agendus level capabilities on a phone that can actually browse the web...which my 755 struggles to do.

YES- we're all still going to be disappointed by the Epic- I'll say it right now- but if they could at least ship a product BUG FREE- which most android phones seem unable to do lately- I'd be happy.

I love the form factor- could care less about the front facing cam- but I'll take it, but I'm really concerned about speed and GPS. As long as I don't wait 10 seconds for the calendar or email apps to load up like my pre- when my 755 was almost INSTANT, and as long as google maps/navigation doesn't crash daily like it did on my EVO- I'll be happy.

But I'm sure contacts still won't be as good as Web OS, and I doubt Iambic will get Agendus on Android working as well as on the Palm OS before it's time to ditch the Epic for something else...

Sad but true. Glad Sprint allows upgrades every 12months...:)

Agreed. No phone is perfect. It's all personal preferance and what you need in a phone. I still love my Moment as it's my first Android phone. It pwns my Archos IT5 with Android lol. I have a feeling that the Epic will be a great device, though. Just don't expect it to be perfect, no piece of technology is. Let's just hope they stick with it for a lot longer than they did the Moment, I hope to have Gingerbread on the Epic someday ;) lol.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news- I SERIOUSLY doubt most of the phones released this summer will see Gingerbread.

Why? Google has yet to announce WHAT features it will have and the hardware needed to run it- and the device manufacturers make too much money getting you to upgrade. I could see them supporting minor upgrades like 2.1 to 2.2, 2.3 etc. but the days of 1.5 to 2.2 are dead and gone for the future now that Google has announced they're going to slow the release schedule.

If a new major OS update cycle is going to routinely be 12months or so- I could see phones NOT getting it if they're running a previous version UNLESS they're 3 months from release of phone. I doubt 3.0 will be released before Spring- and thus- MAYBE January phones will get 3.0 but doubtful any of our summer released ones.

Do I have any insider info? NOPE- but looking at how the landscape is changing and working in the consumer products field for over a decade... these things become painfully obvious.

Keep in mind Android is not a manufacturer- and is NOT a single device like the iphone- they have more legacy support because Apple MAKES the phone- Had Google kept with the Nexus ONE- perhaps we could have seen similar support- but Google has admitted that is not their model.

Get the Epic for what it is- but understand what it very well may not be- a future proof phone.

As long as it WORKS as advertised for up to 24months I'd be happy- something MOST of my phones have not done since my days of owning Tmobile Sidekicks... (SK1,2,3- jumped ship at that point- I gave up a LOT of functionality just to have a more reliable experience as I was frustrated at how poor Treo's performed to that point- but finally jumped to a 755 and was surprised at what it did right (finally) but apps still bricked the phone way too much.) and this year's data loss incident killed Sidekick/Danger's flawless track record overnight...

1.5 -> 1.6 -> 2.0 -> 2.1 That's a pretty nice lifespan for upgrades.

To see the D2 not get upgraded from 2.2 to 3.0 would be a bit surprising. Will the high-end summer phones get upgraded to 3.0? Probably, but it will be a few months before we see it on our phones.

Actually, the yearly release schedule is not starting until AFTER Gingerbread. Keep in mind that Gingerbread is currently slated for Q4, which would put its release about six months after FroYo. I have a hard time believing that the DInc, X, Evo, and Galaxy S phones will not GET Gingerbread.

Agreed all. Google stated (so I heard) that we needed a 1ghz processor for Gingerbread. Well we have that so maybe we'll be ok. I certainly hope so. Although, if it works as intended for at least 12 months I'll be happy!

Never buy a phone for what it could be, buy it for how it is when its released. Updates are never guaranteed. I learned this lesson with the Palm Pre and being an early adopter.

Agreed. +1. Although it doesn't hurt to hope :)
