Smiley faces have disappeared

When I go to send a text, the icon I press to send a smiley face etc has gone white and no icons come up, I have emptied the caChe and it worked but can't remember how to do that, all help would b gratefully received

The first and easiest solution (if you like) would be to install a third party keyboard. There are tons of them on Google Play but I would recommend the first 20 or so because after those in the list the apps start becoming unreliable and unsafe. After installing the app of your choice you can now use emoticons and a customized keyboard if you like. If you do not prefer to have a third party keyboard try these steps.
1. Go to settings
2. Find "Application Manager" or "Apps"
3. Scroll over to the tab that shows every single apps you have on your phone.
4. It should be in alphabetical order and scroll down to "[Your Manufactures Name] i.e. Samsung Keyboard or Keyboard
5. There should be a button to clear data.
