I just fixed this by downloading Handcent. No new keyboards just a different and absolutely fine mms/sms system. Got the yellow smileys back and can now understand other people's emoticons again!

I HATE the android smileys. Hate them.
It is almost impossible to see the faces so you cannot tell what they are supposed to mean.
ONe of the worst things about the phone

The green alien droid emoticons are 'creepy'. I hate them. Luckily, my brother who has an iphone said all he received was a typed smilie, no graphic from me. S4 user. Only thing about phone that truly bothers me. Solutions, with some details, please? I don't want to have any problems trying to get the common yellow smilies, etc. What a PITA, and I don't think people are overreacting at all to these ugly and creepy emoticons.

Just download kii keyboard with handcent emoji and u will have best smiley faces

Thanks for suggestion. I am becoming a Swype addict, so....

in light of that, does it matter if I download the 'kii keyboard with handcent emoji' concerning Swype keyboard or my use of voice texting?

I was also a hater of the little droid emoticons...on my phone (Verizon Galaxy Nexus) they were black and completely indistinguishable.
Today I downloaded Handcent as suggested above in other posts and it is SO much better.
Just don't forget to go into settings and disable the crappy standard messaging service!

I WISH they would have given the option to toggle between traditional YELLOW CUTE smileys that are easy to see the emotion on and these AWFUL GREEN piles of junk. Even these old things are better than what is on the Samsung Galaxy S4 now. GIVE US THE OPTION PEOPLE! I LOVE SWYPE. Does ANYONE have an app that works directly with swype and where the receiver can see the smileys as well and vice versa.

When my friend texts me from an iPhone I have to see these robotic blase army green blobs. HELP!!!

What you see is the Android smiley. What the receiver will see is the standard smiley used for their phone.

I agree . I understand the Android market wanting to advertise themselves, but this is not the way. Each emoticon looks exactly the same. And when I got my new Samsung Galaxy S4, it took me a week to even find the smileys. In the meantime, my friends were texting me with these green alien looking smileys that looked like they had crushed heads, and all I could think is "why the hell did my friend choose this ugly smiley?" Little did I know that once I found my own smileys, I had the same shushed face ugly android critters, its really ruined the entire point of smileys when the emotion or expression can't even be understood. Whose dumb idea was this? I won't even be using them anymore. I've tried downloading other keyboards to use other smileys, but nothing actually is working, even things I have paid for. So, I am just writing smiley in parenthesis from now on, like I was the first week I got my phone. Someone should really send out a software update to get rid of these terrible, ugly, useless things and get back the regular round faces, with expressions you can actually make out, and I don't care what color, as long as their actual circles with viewable expressions. A half squished robot head is NOT A SMILEY!!

Google created Android. The smiley as explained earlier is the Android Mascot. You friends were not sending them to you. You phone just interprets smiley as Andy. What you send will be received using what ever emoticons their system uses. Unless they are on Android they would not see Andy.

I want to agree with everything that everyone has said that is negative about the green splurges. It's hard to see if they are happy or sad or sick. And if you do look carefully they are just plain ugly. It may be that it is just the way it is or just part of the Android corporate identity. But maybe Android didn't really mean to identify themselves with an ill-defined, unclear, unattractive green splurge. So maybe it is good to let them know!? : - >

Andy sucks.
Sometimes you can't tell what the emoticon is trying to express.
Android needs to get over branding their own type of emoticons and force
us to receive these message emoticon we can figure out.
PERIOD.

I know this thread is old, but I can't stand these either. The solution offered here works with SMS/MMS, but doesn't do anything to fix the problem in FB messenger, which is apparently just adopting the default icon pack. Yuck. Shouldn't there be a way to get in there and change this? Not to mention I'm on CM...

Sorry for the thread bump, but I just got a new cell phone and I really miss my old cell phone's smilies.

My old phone was a Samsung Sidekick 4g (with tmoble) and here's a pic with some of my old smilies...



Does anyone recognize these smilies as anything I can download anywhere from Playstore? they're not your typical yellow smilies, but I've fallen in love with the black and white smilies because I thought they were too cute.

My new phone is an LG Optimus f3q if that matters...

I would GREATLY appreciate any and all help anyone can give me in figuring out how to somehow get my old smilies back.
