OH! That's what they are!! I was completely confused. I was wondering why Google where constantly forcing me to look at a weird image of Shrek.

Whereas instead they are literally changing the content of MY texts. Personally I find this morally questionable, but having looked a bit further into the legal side of this, it appears to be illegal as well. Changing the content of a private communication and then passing it off as the original i.e. changing my original text of a colon, hyphen and right parenthesis into an image instead seems to be illegal. This actually goes against several country's laws concerning fraudulent communication! But more annoying than another breach of local law by Google and partners, is that I can't send the exact message that I WANT to send on MY OWN PHONE!!! Aren't these commercial entities in our lives enough already without them also appearing in any text I send where I choose to express MY emotional state. I take offence at this. (plus they're ugly as hell and very difficult to tell what emotion the 'droid' is supposed to be representing - so basically purposeless except to ensure we remember that Google own our phones, even though we paid for them)

p.s. just realised I may be replying rather than just commenting (only the first line was meant as a reply. The rest was commentary).

You know I agree with some of those who said that you are using a completely different platfrom to iphone and blackberry. If you are trying to get the same out of android then sorry to say you will not get it. Personally I think android is great on iphone your limited on memory but on android u can just change sd card for more memory. I cant see how you can hate android just based on I one simply thing like smileys strange.

I have a Galaxy s4. I figured out how to get the little yellow emojis (not exactly the standard yellow smileys)….I see 2 problems with it. You can’t use the “voice-to-text” feature, which I use frequently and it automatically changes your text to an MMS rather than SMS. Here are the instructions on how to do it:
Click on settings and then choose My Phone and scroll down to Language and Inputs. Make sure samsung keyboard is your default keyboard.(uncheck Svoice) Go to your text messages and create a message. Click on the Symbol key on the keyboard and you will see a smiley face. There you will see the Emojis.

Yellow Smileys are universal. The horrible green aliens are imposed on one without consent by Samsung and only work on Samsung phones. So, if you send one of those in a message to anyone that has not got a Samsung phone there will just be a box or something ridiculous. In other words the whole idea of the green aliens is fatally flawed and the yellow smileys should be restored. Also if you download the Emoji emicons they do not have the standard round Smileys. All in all Samsung have a lot to answer for. It seems to the way of large corporations to arrogantly do what suits them rather than what the customer wants. Even on here if you insert a Smiley which is shown as a yellow Smiley on the icons above the post it comes out as a horrible green alien. Urrgh......
