Hi Guys, just found your thread thought id chip in,
just checked my TmobileUK 12m simo contract with unlimited sms and I've been charged 25p per mms for sending a youtube url in a sms to a friend on GifGaf payg, so obviously sms been auto converted to mms, my Handset is a HTC oneX, any1 have a valid answer I will be asking TmobileUK ASAP! Ta ;)

Corrected post. Note 3 on 4.4 sent small text with 5 emoticons as MMS even though it did not say it was converting to MMS.

The SMS is strictly limited to 160 ordinary characters & it is a worldwide standard across telephony. It makes use of the gaps between normal telephone signals, and that is why it is so cheap. An MMS is data in the real sense, and that's why you need mobile data on to use them. Emoticons and other such things are not ordinary characters, and that is why they are converted into MMS. The SMS itself is hailed to be one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century.

Wait... Hold on. This is only a recent issue, because all phones before this Android "feature" came to light were perfectly capable of sending "long" SMS messages with emoticons inline. How they do that is a worldwide standard as well: The long messages are broken up into multiple messages with a [1 of 3], [2 of 3] type header so the phone at the other end can stitch them back together in the correct order. And emoticons, even though they're shown graphically, are converted into their standard ASCII representation, meaning they use 2 or 3 standard characters to send... Has the world forgotten what smileys actually are? Anyway, it's not rocket science, these features have been standard for a decade or more and it's ridiculous that Android (or Samsung's implementation, not sure who's at fault here) has decided to change it around and cause hassle for users like that.

I couldn't believe it when I started getting multimedia messages from someone with a single line and a smiley in them - and she didn't realise that that's why she's spending a lot more on her bill than she thought. And when I'm abroad, it costs me a heap of money to *receive* them where receiving an SMS is free, and yet receiving an SMS from another phone can look identical so there is zero added benefit for me by sending it as an MMS.

Don't use that "it's how the technology works and it's impossible to do it any other way" rubbish when it's absolutely untrue for me and anyone else with more experience of mobile phones than just the last year or two of Android.

i just made hangouts on my note 3 the default sms as i was also having this problem it appears to be samsungs messaging app but no probe sending via hangouts:D

Well. I now see 'MMS alert' was not ticked in 'SMS/MMS' in Messages - Settings. That's why I stopped getting an on-screen alert when my SMS was being converted to an MMS message. I blame KitKat for resetting this, although I never knew it was there and I rarely send long SMS now.

Because you get charged for sending mms unlike text messages which are free

You do? Since when? Unlimited text includes text (SMS) , picture / video (MMS).

I'm using Textra with Swiftkey.

My texts with emoticons do NOT get converted to mms using this setup.

Its very easy just when you are sending the text remove its subject and tadaa you will have it converted to a simple sms..... :D

Here's what doesn't make sense.. my husband and I are both using galaxy note 3s both on kit kat 4.4.2 both using stock sms app and stock keyboard.
His phone will send emoji as regular sms and mine converts to mms. Our settings are identical. We are both with rogers on the same plan. I have compared my phone to quite a few people and most do not have this issue.
I would have no problem if my husbands phone did the same or people I compared it with. But it seems to be just some people.

That's great and all. But it's not a solution. Plus I have a galaxy gear to reply I have to use the default sms app. So the just use a different app answer doesn't work for everyone.
There needs to be a proper fix to this, not just work arounds. .

Hangouts is still converting all my messages and images to mms. Annoying. Not sure if it affects those who are recieving my messages or not.

actually after coming on here looking for a solution for this sms problem i found out about chomp from u guys & downloaded it & this app is actually super fast!

Dear Rusty:

Not everyone is as stupid as you think. What they're saying is NOT that SMS should magically be able to send emoticons-- they're saying INSTEAD of converting the ENTIRE TEXT to MMS-- the EMOTICON should ITSELF be converted to the alphanumeric symbols they represent-- such as :) or :-/ ---which of course, CAN be sent via SMS. THEN-- the receiver's phone could/would convert the alphanumeric symbols BACK INTO an emoticon --OR if they don't have that capabililty--- then just display the alphanumeric characters. iPhones do that afterall. It's not like we're asking for a miracle here.

Just noticed this behavior on my Note 3. Found this "fix":

Go to Messages > Settings > SMS/MMS

On Text Message (SMS) settings, select Input mode > GSM alphabet

Enjoy! ;D

Thank you ! I was going crazy with the automatic UNDESIRED converting of my grocery list to mms because it was more than 160 characters.
