Well, in case you didn't know, Verizon assigned a "phone number" to every Xoom device.

So... a necessary question: Can we send and receive texts? Either to the phone number assigned the Xoom, or to send/receive texts that are sent to my VZW phone?

I don't think so, but a friend thinks otherwise.

To see your particular phone number, go to Status> About Tablet. You'll see your "phone number".

I believe this is more a a formal thing. In order to give a device service i believe you need a phone number. Try calling that number see what happens

I did call -- rang and rang, no answer. I also texted the number, and while my phone gave me a green check mark (delivered), nothing happened on my Xoom.

No texting on the xoom, but you can use email as a work around

For instance Verizon uses this convention for emailing a text. 1234567890 @ vtext .com

But there are different versions for the different carriers, I'm sure you can find the rest of them online

When the person recieves the text it looks normal except it says its coming from your email, it works really well which is no surprise considering text messaging is basically a scam to make money off of emails

From looking at a verizon flyer it looks like you should be able to. According to the brochure you have use vz access manager or other SMS capable connection manager. Also it states normal billing rates apply.

No texting is allowed. I tried to setup my verizonwireless account online, and when it asked for my number (part of the registration process) it said it would text my temporary password to me. I called Verizon to bring attention to the issue and the woman told me that the Xoom is unable to receive text, and my temporary pass code would have to be mailed to me. :(

Text is SMS/MMS service, which is cellular telephony functionality rather than internet data traffic. The device would have to have a cellular radio in it to do that, meaning they may as well enable phone service on it as well at that point.

I don't see why they don't just enable the SMS/MMS capability on the account and then forward that traffic to their servers and make it accessible via an app on the Xoom though just to provide the service for those that want it. It would cost money though...

From your Google voice account settings set notifications for voice mail and then also text notifications to go to your email. You get email alerst as they came in and you can replying right from the email. Tada texting on the xoom !

How did you get Google Voice to work on the Xoom? I heard people couldnt get it to function on the device.

you can text from the google voice webpage at voice.google.com. Just because there is not an app yet does not mean you can't access it that way. :-D
