"SmsContactsBackup" taking up 8.67GB of space! Can I get rid of this?

A few months ago I upgraded from the Galaxy S4 16GB to the Galaxy S6 32GB and I already filled up ALL of the storage which I'm pretty sure is impossible. When I went to look at the Storage settings, I saw that Miscellaneous Files are taking up 17.58 GB of space! I know that 8.04 GB is system memory but 8. 67 GB of that is from "SmsContactsBackup". What is that? And can I delete it?
I have most of my contacts saved to either Verizon Cloud or to Google. I don't understand how such a large portion of my memory is taken up by that.
Please help, I am so frustrated with this phone. Thank you!
