All the pictures taken with the front facing camera come out really smudged looking, especially people's faces. Cleaning the lens doesn't help, the beauty mode is off, so I'm out of ideas.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I notice that this selfie can allows you to tap to focus. Have you tried that?

Lens clean?

I think it could also be a combination of the sensor and processing.
Samsung uses the same sensor and their front camera is soft and smudgy.

Really like the 6P's front camera, as its sharp and looks a lot more natural in comparison to the likes of the 10 and S7.

What phone were these selfies taken with?

I've noticed that the selfie cameras photos appear fuzzy as well. I might take 1 or 2 selfies per new phone and though I don't use it much, but I expected better. The reviews I've seen are better in quality.

Looking at my gallery, there's a selfie with several family members that is clear and crisp, though I won't post it here. I've also seen plenty of selfie vids taken with the 10 that are clear so hopefully this doesn't dissolve into one of those misconception threads where suddenly the 10 selfie cam is bad. Like any phone, I'm sure some people will have issues with various things though.

Does the HTC 10 have OIS on the front camera? Try turning it on and off. I don't have one so I don't know what settings would be on that particular phone.

I've tried everyone's suggestions and still getting that smudged look. Mainly on the indoor front pics.
Could it be the indoor lighting messing with them?
