Safe mode pretty much disables everything on the phone other than how it came out of the box (if not exactly that, something close to that). They use it in troubleshooting to see if it's possibly a third-party app that's causing the issue(s). In your case, it would appear that something you installed, or some setting(s) you changed are causing your phone to go bonkers. Hopefully you + them can identify the offender, and fix it ... otherwise, you may have to do a factory reset, then add your apps back one by one, slowly, and monitor the phone after each to see which one is all of a sudden causing your battery to drain like crazy.
Good luck, at least you know the phone's hardware is ok so far.
