So here's the BIG question

I skipped the middle pages so forgive me if this was mentioned already, but isn't it possible that instead of showing the bars for the current signal type (LTE, EVDO, 1x) that it will only show call signal strength, likely giving it a much higher showing in # of bars. I think the iPhone 4 did something similar with one of their first updates.

The GN is actually the first phone that accurately shows signal strength of the current network. Something which is showing customers "too much" and VZW may "fix".

I should be more clear...I mean maybe the update will change it to the method I described. I know that is how it is currently shown.

Why do you keep the Nexus if it doesn't work for you? The enjoyment of whining?

You can't figure out how to get flash going on websites (hint: download flash), but you are now a radio engineer. I love it! :D

Hey, yet another helpful post by LangHoo! Funny LangHoo how you keep coming back to this thread when my posts so obviously bug you. You've got some serious issues my friend. Can you get it through your head that I love the phone except for this issue? Can you also get it through your head that unlike you, I recognize the good AND the bad of things I own. You on the other had are one of those guys that is so protective of anything they own, that anyone that criticizes it is met with your hostility. It's like calling someone's kid 'ugly'. Geeeshh.

Just for your edification "LangHoo" or whatever your name is, I had originally understood that ICS would not initially have Flash and it was to show up in a later iteration of ICS. Sorry BUD if the recent release of Flash for ICS eluded me. We all can't be perfect like you.

Hey guys, is there an 'ignore' list on this forum?

i gave in and returned the phone today,Im pretty sure i got a lemon. The youtube app wasnt playing videos without buffering like crazy..Videos werent playing at all in other apps.I had only 3g in areas where my tbolt always got a 4g signal.I was going to try another one but decided to go back to my tbolt. The main issue i had with the phone was how tall it is.I have big hands but i swould struggle to reach the top of the phone with one hand. That being said the i enjoyed most of my time with it and im gonna miss so many people giving me compliments on how sweet looking it was.Oh well at least i get to check this website for the next great phone. My next phone will definately have software keys though.Loved those

Careful now, you've set yourself up for the ''Wrath of LangHoo" because you're obviously a 'whiner'. ;)

My Galaxy Nexus is flawless with respect to signal strength. Have no idea what you're talking about with respect to it being Samsung's fault.

Not sure who you're addressing this to, but if it's me, the answer is pretty simple. Samsung does not have a stellar reputation for their radios. Just research the difference in feedback from users of Samsung phones vs. Motorola phones in terms of their radios. My experience with both shows that difference too. I do think the radio in the Nexus is a lot better than what I experienced with the Samsung Charge. That was a beaut!

Excuse me while I take a giant step back to avoid the next incoming LangHoo missile. :)

Why not return, if you hear of some AMAZING fix that everyone is saying they all have perfect signals, you get back on the Nexus wagon? I would never keep any phone if it was as bad as you say. Just sayin..

I'm not sure how you're thinking I'm saying the phone is that bad? I've praised the phone many times, I've gone so far as to say I love the phone. So how is this saying the phone is so bad?

Where the phone is bad is where many many others have found it to be bad, in marginal signal areas. If all I did was wind up in marginal signal areas, I would return it. But I'm in those marginal areas far less than I am in areas where I get a consistent 4G signal.

What I've said repeatedly (and some just don't listen) is that in marginal areas other phones do better. Does that mean that I'd rather have all those other phones that do better in those areas? No. Does that mean that I should ignore this obvious weakness? No again.

I just think we have some guys on this forum that are WAY WAY too overprotective of their Nexus. Man oh man guys, it's a great phone, the best I've had overall, but it DOES have issues. You pick your poison.

Uh oh, watch out, here comes LangHoo!!!!! INCOMING!!!!!

Its too bad this phone was released during what has turned out to be the worst month of verizon service since I started using them ten years ago. We have a Xoom, Nexus, and a razr, all 4G, in home and they have all been absolutely hurting in regards to reception.
I would not be so quick to be blaming the Nexus or any other 4G device until verizon cleans up whatever they have been dealing with lately.

As far as I know they have fixed it, at least in the NY area. Everything has been back to normal for me.

Why do people go to such great lengths to slam my nexus? They dont even have one? Is it becuase the nexus rides shot gun in my pants? Hells yes!

Thanks for clearing that up :) Yeah it'll probably turn into a smoke and mirrors sham, and when VZW drops more calls I'll get more irrate customers. Seriously I have faith in the company, but all of the cloak and dagger about their network just sucks especially when they are so far ahead of schedule with their 4G. Be a little honest, take pride in doing something no other network has done, seriously...

I've said it in a few posts earlier, but the issue is on the back end of VZW and registering the device SIMs on the network. You can thank the expanding network and release of this phone for outages as well.

How would the release of the Nexus create such a burden on the network? It's not like this was a new release of an IPhone where countless phones are sold. I can't imagine there were so many Nexus's sold that could have crashed the system. If the 4G network is that fragile, we're all in trouble.

Ken,

care to share the location of any of these low signal areas? I am on LI and I have the same issues that you describe, except that I haven't been able to predict when it will drop, just yet. I'd like to see if I can go to one of the areas you say you experience data drop, and replicate, while testing both sets of radios. Obviously I'm looking for public places.

Absolutely Willstilson! If you're familiar with the Walt Whitman Mall, there's your ideal testing ground. If you know the mall, use the entrance by California Pizza Kitchen at the end of the mall that's closest to Best Buy. As you walk into the mall you'll probably have 4G reception. But as you walk toward the back of the mall (toward Macy's with CPK on your left), watch your 4G signal. You'll see a precipitous drop in strength as you continue to walk toward Macy's directly in front of you and you'll see a total loss of 4G and the beginning of 3G. You may even be unable to get any data depending on the day.

It's precisely these areas that my Rezound & Bionic maintained a 4G signal without a hitch. Also try hanging a left before you get to Macy's and walk toward the end of the mall (forget which store is there) which is pretty close and check out your signal. Also try walking right toward the longer end of the mall and check out your signal.

I'd really appreciate hearing back from you after this test! :)

Edit: Forgot to ask you what the other phone you'll be testing is? You mentioned 'both sets of radios'.

Networks like this are not as fragile as they are complex. SIM registering and having two separate sim standards (std/micro) have had more unseen consiquences than I've been able to consider. At first I thought this would be great for customers, but it's proven to be only great if VZW gets everything registered correctly. Why did some sim cards take 30min+ to activate while others only took 5min? It definitely was not the sim card, but instead the device registering the SIM. After a sim is activated it's very easy to pop it into another device and it's got service, but again why is there this initial issue with the network activation when it comes to different devices all using the same registration protocol on a brand new SIM? My only answer that is not too far out of bounds to release is that VZW still uses an ESN system as well as SIM cards. The databases have to work together, and they way it's implimented currently is putting a strain just on databases.

Imagine every SIM made in a database as well as every phone in a database. The databases must meet up when a SIM is signed up to a phone. These lists are used by everything from the blacklist, upgrades, insurance, price plan changes, and so on. Using two lists is more than twice as taxing as using the old ESN system. If it wasn't the GN it could have been the RAZR or the Rezound which caused these issues. Adding an entire production inventory of phones into the database is expanding the size of the database file etc etc etc...

I hope that clarifies some things without causing some sort of terror. Really this is an issue when a company like VZW keeps a PERFECT security record of every phone/device on their network to reduce theft. A bad ESN phone is not a fun thing to own, and stupid thieves learn quickly how much it sucks. This is really amazing since VZW will keep expanding in order to meet the demand, and they are smart enough to learn from their mistakes. In the year of 2011 VZW has expanded their databases a considerable amount considering how much their 4G lineup has grown.

I'll tell you exactly what I think is going to happen with this game that VZW is about to play. People in these marginal areas will now get several bars where they either got 1 or none, yet they'll still lose their connectivity as they did before in these same areas with 1 or none. This will cause people to say "What the hell, I've got 2 bars and I can't surf the net...what the hell is this". At least when they see zero bars they know what's going on.

I thought carriers were done with this kind of game after the bad press AT&T got. Just as with politics, if you don't learn from history, you're bound to repeat the same mistakes.

I hope you see that there are some of us who really take pride in what is trying to be accomplished, but honestly I've had people in high places telling me to only respect how ignorant I thought people can be instead of respecting them. It's people like this that cause a lot of profit, and also keep people like myself pretty cynical. Working in this field is tough sometimes.

As they say in French, "Aint the truth!" ;)

I think since it is more of a hit or miss since not everyone is having issues that it may be more network related and most likely is not hardware related. I mean the thunderbolt and charge both had pretty low reception at first and was greatly helped via ota updates.
