So, how good are Nandroid backups?

Should I have any concern at all that the restore will not work? Anyone here ever seen one fail?

I really want to try some new ROMs, but just don't want to hassle with rebuilding everything from scratch if I decide to go back.

I use cwm to back up my ROM. I've had to go back before and it was just as I had left it. Settings, ringtones etc. Can't speak for other backup apps though.
