So is there is there a good sticky on rom flashing and apps that make the backup easy

I went through the 12 steps on the FAQ in this forum and then tried to use Simple root and went through that....i went through the series of instructions and then the phone restarted. I assumed that was all and that I was running rooted 2.1.

I then proceeded to get rom manager from the market and install a rom from the SD card but then it said I must flash clockwork recovery but it says error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.

I did step 2 of the simple root but I dont know whats going on.

So before I had the chance to try this I used the step 2 of simple root to flash the clockwork recovery again and used that menu to install a stocklike 2.2 rom...

Upon rebooting the sprint 4g thing kept on looping. ****.

You use your volume buttons to toggle what you're picking. Then power to select. You should have flashed clockwork right?

I've flashed clockwork already. I'm now at the menu.

I see:
reboot system now
apply sd card:update.zip
wipe cache partition
install zip from sdcard
nandroid
partitions menu
advanced
go back

which ones should I do. Sorry but I need an idiots walk through guys!

So it got me booted up! Looks like I'm running 2.2 now! myn-OTA_Supersonic_3.29.651.5-DEODEXED is the ROM I used. Would you advise I try another? Also as far as backing up contacts/texts etc before flashing roms what would you advise. As the saver of my EVO I put my trust in you!

Also the phone is harrassing me about a voicemail optional upgrade being available. Do I want to cancel that?

You can download upgrades for apps when rooted, its updates to the OS from Sprint/HTC that you don't want to download.

Depending on how the ROM is signed, you probably won't be able to.

Best suggestions are either a) use a ROM thats signed in a way that will allow Sprint to update your apps (one off the top of my head is fresh) or B) Use a ROM that the DEV's either have already updated the ROM or C) Use whatever ROM you want and go find the apps that are all over the interwebs that can be installed right to your phone (some come in flashable format).

Main point is you have options. If the phone won't let you update a Sprint app it's not the end of the line.

Also for football and nascar, to update them you can send a text to 7777 with either the word "football" in it or "nascar" in it and it will send you a link to donwload the apk and install the program.

Cheers!

Ah, good point :) I just assumed he was asking because he thought it'd break root. I was always curious why some ROMs weren't able to update apps and some were.
