So I'm Looking to Lock in Unlimited and Get the Droid Bionic Later...

So I'm looking to buy a Droid Charge and get unlimited data grandfathered in for the Droid Bionic. How does this work? I understand that if I get a 3G/4G smartphone I could keep it when I renew or upgrade, but will I keep unlimited data if I buy the Droid Bionic (when it's released of course) at full retail price and get them to switch the service from the Charge to the Bionic? Also, would I be able to keep unlimited data on an added of contract line?

As long as you stay on a smartphone you should be fine. As for adding a new line - if it was after the cut off date it would have to have the new plan.

I really don't understand why everybody thinks they'll lose their unlimited.

Tiered is for new customers/added lines. Although a rep. may try to convince you otherwise in an effort to line his pocket/make his check look better.

Welcome to the group.

Unfortunately, even with all the conjecture all over the web, nobody really knows what will happen if a person waits until the 7th or later to get a new phone.

Personally, I wouldn?t even trust the information you get from a regular VZW employee, in person or over the phone, on the 6th?

Yes, if you currently have a smartphone with the $30 unlimited data, you will retain that when picking up a Bionic (or any smartphone). As of the current rules, you will be able to stay on the $30 unlimited plan forever, as long as you keep buying smartphones when upgrading/renewing.

Just FYI, you don?t need to have a ?smartphone? to have the unlimited data plan added to your line. You can have the unlimited data plan added to most every feature phone, it?s just that most people don?t because it is a waste of money.

I'm probably not going to buy an outdated overpriced phone (Charge) and deal with the 2gb limit. I'd rather have a nice phone.

Certainly!, as long as you DO NOT make plan changes and are just getting a phone. If a rep. tries to tell you ANY different he totally and completely wrong. Get a different rep. Hell, I have an AllTel smartchoice plan still after a couple of phone only upgrades. Verizon doesn't offer those do they?? HEY, I still have one!!

My problem is that I dont even have a smartphone data package now. I just have a feature phone with unlimited data. I have wanted to upgrade to a smartphone for forever and targeted the bionic as the phone to get. As close to 2 year future proof as you can get on verizon anytime soon(dual core and 4g).

But now with tiered data messing everything up Im not sure what to do. I plan on streaming alot of video once i get a 4g smartphone. i have alot of free time at work that I use now to browse online where once i upgrade would be time to stream video. The timing of all this seems a little too conspicuous. I dont think verizon wants their flagship 4G device to launch until after tiered pricing is in place.

So i guess i will just have to rely on boards like this etc until the last moment possible to make up my mind. If theres no news about Bionic and we get a confirmed date for tiered with prices, I will have to either jump on the charge and likely have buyers remorse the next 2 years or try to work the system and buy a cheap smartphone on ebay to get unlimited data locked in then still have my upgrade for the bionic.

Or there is always the option to switch carriers as a last resort.

Ah another possible option then. So your saying i could have them add the $30 unlimited data to my samsung rogue now instead of the $10 plan i have and that should lock in even if i upgrade to a smartphone?

I know its alot of guessing right now but i wouldnt mind paying the extra for a month or two until bionic releases. Just wait til a day before tiered goes into effect.

Just found the below. So, looks like CloeHokie specified smartphones for a reason. Based on this, you will not be grandfathered in if you have a feature phone with unlimited data, only if you have a smartphone.

Who can you quote your source on that if you meant it for any contract signs (ie. renewals with phone subsidy purchases)?

There seems to be 2 camps right now and I was pretty close to going and getting myself a Charge this week but now im not so sure. Even the Verizon camp seems confused by this new policy that is coming.

So, a new customer could get a cheaper 3g smartphone with unlimited data prior to the 7th then upgrade to 4g bionic after the 7th and retain the unlimited data? I'm guessing the later bionic upgrade would be at full price, unless buying from someplace with a wide window for device return / switching?
