So is this what the nefarious "signal issue" looks like?

Since I got 4.0.4, or a short time after, I've been having an odd, daily problem with my Nexus. I should note that I never had any signal issues with this device before getting 4.0.4.

I live and work in a strong 4G area. I just about always have 3-4 bars. Right now I have 3.

Generally the phone will be in 4G mode. However, I have noticed that after a period of using the data connection -- say, browsing, watching YouTube, or listening to Sirius -- the data connection will change to 3G. Same area, same use, but the phone switches over for some reason.

A variation on this occurs now and then where the 4G signal just sort of "stops." The phone says it is in 4G mode, the bars are blue, but no data is getting through. Webpages don't load, music or video stops, emails don't get delivered. After a minute or so of this "stalling," the phone will drop to 3G. (That's just when I've noticed. I've had emails go undelivered for more than 20 minutes.)

And it will stay on 3G until I do something, like toggle CDMA/LTE mode, or toggle airplane mode, etc.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hmm. . I'm not sure that I had this problem before 4.0.4 because the majority of the time I was leaving it in 3G mainly because the area I live in unfortunately hardly has any signal and seems like I'm going inbetween 3G and 4G areas.. However lately I have been trying to leave it on LTE/CDMA mode to test it out since the past few days I have been staying in an area with a normally strong 4G signal and honestly my 4G connection has been cutting out (usually just for a few seconds at a time kinda randomly throughout the day.. could be a few times an hour or just once.. random.). Although, my connection drops everything when it happens.. voice and data. I had tried numerous battery and SIM card pulls (with phone off) with no improvements. Last night, though, I tried pulling the battery while phone was still on and removing the SIM card for a moment then reinserted both and fully charged. Knock on wood the past 16 hours or so I have not dropped the 4G connection once. .could have just gotten lucky though this time honestly ha

I am having the exact same problem. Just stared a couple days ago.

The only person I know with signal problems just has a weaker signal and the data goes to 3G even when mine still has 4G. I haven't really heard of anyone having the problem you describe...

I'm seeing this too. Occasionally, the phone switches to 3G for no apparent reason in strong LTE areas. Also, the LTE connection will sometimes just hang for 30 seconds or so. A third thing I'm seeing is that the phone won't go back to LTE after being in a 3G area for a while. It does switch to 4G, but it takes longer than it should once I enter an area with LTE service.

These problems don't have me too worried. They don't occur for me daily, but I see them 2-3 times each month, certainly enough for me to notice. The third issue seems to happen only when I go quickly from a really weak 3G area to an LTE area in the car.

same problem here, but I cant pinpoint when it started. my issue is also location specific. I called vzw and they opened a ticket last thursday, but I have not heard back from them

That is some of the original "signal issue". The 4G would just disappear. (My issues happened regardless of ROM or Android version). But, in addition to that, I would lose the network completely. No 4G, no 3G, no cellular voice, just no signal at all. I swapped phones four times and I have a definite winner now. I can pretty much say that I never lose signal and 4G stays on in 4G areas. It has made a huge difference between tolerating my Nexus and now loving my Nexus...
So, if you haven't swapped handsets, it is worth the hassle!

It too took me 3 different devices to finally get a device that didn't drop 4G and calls/texts.

Keep trying, it was happening to me 3 times an hour but now it hasn't happened in over 3 days since I got a decent cln device.

Btw I got a plastic box with the whole shebang, it looked looked like a insurance replacement, had an extended battery, power cord, instruction manuals, everything but the actual white box.

Good luck!

My original Nexus was notorious for that. It would just drop data altogether for no apparent reason. Even though I'm in a -75dBm area. I ended up replacing it - not because of the signal issue, but because it ended up being submerged in Tequila (don't ask)

My new Nexus has no such problem. I didn't get a warranty replacement or anything like that, I got a brand new one. The box it came in was arranged differently from my original.

Well I've had an interesting development with this issue. On Saturday I was out and about and I look at my phone and see a notice that the SIM card had been removed and that I would not have signal until it was reinserted and the phone restarted. Obviously I hadn't removed the SIM, and several restarts, SIM pops, and battery pulls later I still couldn't get signal. So I hopped over to VZW and they promptly replaced the SIM.

Ever since, no random dropping from 4G to 3G. I'm going to keep my eye on it, but I'm thinking maybe my SIM was dying for a while. Is that possible? Obviously SIMs die, but would that cause my issue? And what causes SIM death? Heat (I keep mine in a TPU case, and it gets mighty hot to the touch even through that)?

I've been having these signal problems for the last six months. I've been though six different devices, all of watch have had the same problem. I feel your pain.

Just wondering if that has included SIM swaps? I know when I had to swap my first Nexus, the instructions said to keep my SIM (so that I wouldn't need to be re-provisioned).

I've done at lest four SIM card swaps. Sadly, it doesn't seem to help :'( I've been debating about sending back the one I'm using now, and see if maybe that "bad batch" of phone's are gone.

Yeah, my stoppages/drops started again yesterday evening, so it wasn't just the SIM. Sigh. I had none of these problems before 4.0.4... If this keeps up, I'm taking it in.
