So, I've finally played with the S5 for a bit...

I have had the note 2, gs3, gs4, note 3. And I can see them in direct sunlight just as well if not better than my lg g2 which uses LCD. So not a valid argument, I work construction so I'm out in it all day and I've never had a problem with amoled, especially the gs4. It was pretty good in sun

the g2 is awful in the sunlight for the sole fact that it has those weird dots all over the screen.. god that's annoying lol

I have the Xperia Z2, and I honestly don't see the Galaxy S5 even coming close to being a real competitor. There isn't one thing I could criticize about it, except that it doesn't have the Moto X's enhancements. The camera initially seemed a little "meh," but the latest firmware update looks like it has resolved that.

I'm very picky with phones. VERY picky. The Xperia Z2 has everything I was looking for, and then some. The M8 has a more appealing design, but the Z2 isn't a slouch in that department at all. Sony needs to market the hell out of that phone. Seriously, I see very little reason to go with any other phone, and I have traditionally not been pleased with Sony hardware.

My experience with Sony is such that I'll never give them my money again, ever.

For the most part, much of the hardware is either identical or quite similar, so it's pretty odd to say the S5 isn't even close to being a competitor when the hardware in all these flagships are largely similar at the base level. The only place where there is huge differentiation is in Camera Tech (Where Samsung has been consistently better than Sony - especially the software side), UI overlay (which is largely subjective and isn't worth arguing about), and value added features/hardware components in the phone (where Samsung almost always wins).

While there are differences in things like Screen Tech apparently the S5 is no slouch there (and neither was the Note 3, for that matter) Much of the Spec Sheet for these phones can be copied and pasted between them, Lol.

People keep saying that Sony has improved their camera software, but they've continued to disappoint me in real-world use. I'll keep going Samsung cause they have a lot of useful Value Adds.

If I owned a PlayStation then I probably wouldn't have a choice but to consider their devices, but I don't :-) It also doesn't help them that they have such limited carrier support in the USA. AFAIK that phone isn't coming to Verizon Wireless and I'm not due for another carrier switch at least for another 6 months or so. Doesn't matter how amazing it is if it isn't even compatible with/available from my carrier.

So because it -looks- better it doesn't need to function better? Most people put cases on their phones so it doesn't really matter.

All of my phones are naked. Hate cases. Never use them on Any device. :D

The perfect phone for me would have;

  • HTC's premium design
    Samsung's features and removable battery
    Sony's camera tech
    LG/Moto's touchless features

But it's a true story:)
cool story... don't care about battery as the m8 goes all day. i generaly keep my phones away from the water. dropping is the bigger problem. id rather see my phone in direct sun-light. impossible to do with amoled. i don't put my phones in my back pocket.

thanks-. but don't get so defensive it's only a phone and whats good for you may not be good for me.

I'm the same way. Doesn't mean that the vast majority don't do the opposite.

I keep seeing this type of comment over and over but wheres the evidence? Maybe its just a USA thing but here in Sweden I haven't noticed this to be the case at all. Or do you mean among your group of friends most of them use cases?

I don't have sales numbers, but I would guess that the cell phone case business isn't hurting. And yeah, it's probably just Sweden.

Have you seen the phones of everyone in Sweadens phone, as you said "but wheres the evidence? Or do you mean among your group of friends most of them use cases?"

I returned my one because of the bezel and on screen buttons. There is so much wasted space. I have never had a Samsung, but the one I used at an ATT store was nice. My major complaints about Samsung seemed to have been addressed. The lag and stutter seemed to be greatly improved and the reception is much better. The S5 had about 5-7 dbm higher than the S4 next to it.

The original one looks much better, what's up with those rounded corners? Lol

I meant among my friends. In any case I was only curious why so many people automatically assume the majority of people use cases on their smartphone? Often this statement is made as some sort of attack on or defense of why build quality or the materials used in the particular brand of smartphone are irrelevant. You can come up with an original answer or continue with sarcasm, I don't care either way, as long as you answer. Thanks.

It is a safe bet to say there are more phones with cases then without. Your evidence is all around you.. Go to a Starbucks or Panera.. Look at people's phones. I guarantee majority will have cases.

Most people buy them just for the comfort of the device being protected.

I am in Sweden but I get the point you are making and it makes sense. I think I was more trying to get at why people "seem" to use the "reason" why the material or sometimes even the build quality is not a big deal because "hey everyone uses a case so it doesn't matter what the phone is made of". At the same time I don't think one material is better than another. They both have advantages and disadvantages. But to insinuate most people use cases therefore build material is irrelevant is just silly. Build material is not as important as build quality but to attribute that to "because most people use a case" is just silly.
Sorry for the disorganized and most likely hard to understand post. Hopefully you get the point I was trying to make.

I'm an Engineering student right now and I disagree with the whole "premium" material idea. There is no such thing. Every material has its own set of physical properties that can prove good or bad in certain applications. The cost factor isn't the only factor Samsung looked at when choosing to use polycarbonate. It's more scratch resistant, lighter and easier to manufacture large quantities of.

There's no premium material, some people seem to associate metal with such a term. But this is far from the truth.

I can't tell you how sick and tired I am of reading the word "premium" in every review and article...

Try giving a woman cubic zirconia instead of a diamond and just tell her, "Hey baby, there's no such thing as premium materials."

Metal is always considered a "premium" material, when compared to plastic. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that plastic doesn't have its benefits. However, if you asked a dozen phone newbs which looks like the more expensive phone, the M8 or S5, they're going to say the M8.
