Maybe this isn't the best phrasing for the information I'm reaching for. I'm aware that Android is a mobile OS. But is it Googles OS? Or is Google just the brand behind it? People hear Google and are drawn to it so its a selling point, right? Is the benefit manufactures have with Android the fact that it costs them nothing to use the source code for their devices and they are able to manipulate it as they choose? I'm basically interested in as much information on this OS as possible. Its a very intriguing OS and I love it. I use the HTC Hero and its amazing.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe YES, Android is Google's OS, designed by them from the ground up! Android is to Google as Windows is to Microsoft.

And I'm seeing that they have designed Android to work on so many devices, not just phones! That really impresses me. I've read several articles on here and on the web talking about how Android will run on non-phone PDA's, possibly laptops, and even kindle's? Not sure if that's true. But it seems like Google is making this OS very flexible to run on future devices and tech products.

No.

Its Linux based, and was built by a company with the name of, ready for this? Android Inc. Google bought the company and continued development.
