News So you bought an e-reader — here's how you can get the most out of it

I really like the Kobo lineup and would love to have a 'color' display for half the price of the Colorsoft, but man, does Amazon make it 'hard' to leave them! And by 'hard' I mean they are just too damn good compared to the competition! Usually-cheaper and better deals on purchased books, read progress across devices even for 'sideloaded' books (this, in particular, is what's keeping me on a tight grip with the wonderful world of Kindle), you can still 'sideload' books even via e-mail, being able to seamlessly borrow books from different libraries through Libby (without having to jump through hoops like you have to on a Kobo to get multiple cards working on them), and something I didn't think about until recently, the ability to share your library with your household members.

I know some (if not most) of these things can be done on Kobos, but you have to use a gazillion steps and 3rd party apps to get it to work (and it still isn't completely automagic). Sadness.

(y) My Kindles have always done everything I need an e-reader to do. I use mine to - strangely enough - read books. I just don't need the web, games, music, colour or an integrated corkscrew (although that feature might actually be nice for a wino like me ;)) on my e-reader.

It's probably heresy to say such a thing in this type of forum, but sometimes a device that does one thing really, really well is just better than a device that does many, many things adequately.

If they add a corkscrew then I'm definitely never leaving Kindles haha. I, too, prefer it because it's just for reading, but having that touch of color for covers is just so nice to have (just not at the current Amazon price tag). Having cloud storage access like others may be a good thing, though, but since I've yet to run out of storage even on an 8GB one, I don't really need that right now.

Product Idea, however? They should have a display on the BACK of eReaders just to show the cover of the book you're currently reading. I miss the days when you could see what someone was immersed in and maybe strike up a conversation. Now we just see plastic or dirty device covers.

That might work for some, but I wouldn't want people seeing the trash I'm reading and I'd have to hide my Kindle behind something that most people would find a little less offensive, like a National Enquirer or Hustler Magazine. 🤣
