Why would it matter if you made a nandroid backup after installing a custom recovery?

Okay, you're on the right track. He stated he had CWM installed on the phone, so I assumed he could make a backup, but re-reading the post, it seems like not all CWM functionality is on the phone yet? I'm trying to figure out the process he went through. When I rooted my OG D1, the first thing I did was use RSDLite to flash SPRecovery. I figured that's similar to what he did, but maybe not?
