Hi. It kinda freaked me out that my S8+ froze up today and I had to do a "soft reset." I held down the power and volume down keys at the same time for a bit. All is well now. My question is what causes such a thing to occur. Is it a sign of things to come? Thank you.

If it happens frequently I'd take a look at your apps. My S8 was doing that frequently and it ended up being a bad install of an old version of SmartView.

Good idea, thanks! It happened when my MightyText was blowing up my phone and Macbook in tandem. I saw it happening. I will email the devs of Mightytext to give them a heads up. Thanks again.

Yeah. Like @SpookDroid said, all it takes is a poorly written app, or an app that installed improperly. Doing a soft reset (aka reboot) won't hurt the phone.

Also, you can clear the cache partition every so often. Just turn off your phone, then hold the Power/Bixby/Volume Up keys at the same time. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the buttons. It will boot into recovery mode, from there press the down volume until you get to delete cache partition. Select it by pressing the power button, say yes, then restart your phone.

Doing a hard reset (i.e. factory reset) should ALWAYS be your second to last resort. Last resort is sending it in for repairs/replacement.

If it happens every once in a while, I wouldn't worry about it. Every phone glitches every now and then - don't worry! A soft reset, a restart of the device, or a full factory reset (as long as you have all of your important data backed up) are good ways to clean up your phone and make it perform faster/help get rid of glitches. As other users have said, if the freezing persists, then perhaps it would be time to see about a fix/a replacement.
