For chits and giggles i checked my software update on my GS3 and it says service unavailable. Anyone else having this problem?

Check Other Posts; a common problem that requires new SIM card; stop by Verizon and have it replaced.

Try taking taking the sim out for a minute then putting it back in. That works sometimes

Had the service unavailable problem... nice lady at Verizon replaced SIM card ... fixed it!

A new sim card did the trick for me.

This is really a bizarre issue and seems to be pretty widespread.

I want to get this fixed but I don't want to do a factory reset. Some other posts said that the Verizon rep had no idea about the problem and required a reset before giving them a new sim

Extremely wierd that this is a widespread issue. Thank you for your input everyone. I will be going in today to get that new SIM card.

I'm going to go in for a new sim later today. But if they tell me I need to do a reset I'm going to call customer care and have one sent to me.

I was getting the error. I just figured that the servers were overloaded with the high demand for the update. Tried later last night and it downloaded and installed with no problems.

Same here. Was getting the error last night and just went through fine. I think you're right.

I was getting the error as well and was resigned to going to the Verizon Store to get a new SIM card when I came across a possible fix that worked for me.

-Go into settings
-Open Application Manager
-Show All processes
-Find "Google Services Framework"
-Open "Google Services Framework"
-Select "Force Stop"
-Select "Clear Data"
-Exit out and try to perform the software update again

glad it worked for you however not for me.

I've had the same issue as well and planned on stopping by a VZW store to get a new sim, as that appears to have been the only consistent solution.

But then I woke up this morning to find a notice from VZW that I received an update. I checked and my S3 was updated to "HE" from "G7", plus now my manual update check works. Huh, go figure....

I've experienced that in the past on my Thunderbolt and Bionic when they had just started pushing updates.
