Software Update

I'm assuming they meant Kies, which is Samsung and not Verizon.
No, I did not mean Kies. When you plug in your S4, it will mount a CD image on the Mac for a bit. On that image is a software updating application. When you launch that, it finds the update and performs the install.

I had no idea it existed either until today. I've always tried to figure out how to stop that stupid CD from mounting so I never paid any attention to what was on it.

Direct Update is the worst way to update and i'm not shocked on the lag you might be recieving. when updates come a dirty install is never the answer. a format should be done every time
Dang, I was about to do a "dirty" update until I read this. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good app or method to back up all my settings, apps, etc before I wipe my phone for the update?

I know this is a dumb question. Knox , is this need to be turned on? Does it just run in background? I have installed the update I saw the move to sd card. But I don't see anything about knox anywhere? I have the at&t gs4

This worked perfectly for me. Kies always crashes on my PC and using Kies Air or Lite would not/could not capture the update. Great catch! Thank yoU!!

If your not rooted the only way is a program called carbon. Now according to google they do back up app data in the settings section. make sure that is set and backed up. beyond that i don't know

im kind of confused by the run around.....im not rooted, dont plan on doing so, but i want to backup the phone before installing update.....whats a good app to backup with?

Try My Backup, free, or My Backup Pro, paid version. I used it yesterday and I'm not rooted, yet.

You really don't have to worry... the update will not mess up your data (app data or personal data).

What is the best way to run this update, KIES or the built in software updater?

If your not rooted, you may want to take advantage of some of the possibilities with root. My favorite mod after rooting was the Google wallet hack. If you're not rooted, personally your missing out but to each his own. Desperately want to take advantage of the apps to sd card feature but I use folder mount right now. Can't lose root access or my sim links are done. Folder mount was the alternative to not be no able to store app data on the sd card.

Rooted S4

You have to download the Verizon Factory IMG and install it using Odin. Google Verizon Galaxy S 4 stock factory img and I am sure you will find instructions. That is how I did it a few weeks ago.

I think Kies is the only way as of right now. It is supposedly a 1.8GB file you have to download, at least that is what the AC post says. So yeah just do it through KIES.

Kies didn't work at all for me. It recognized that the phone had an update available, but it hung at 0% each time I tried downloading it. I left it for a half hour and it never progressed. This may have been due to the fact that I was using Kies for Mac, I never tried the Windows version. The built in software updater worked perfectly the first time I tried it, took about 20 minutes to download the file.

Just curious a 1.8 gig update on a phone that only came with 8.5 gigs free but now able to move apps to sd card but from what i read only a part of the app moves. How are we really saving space?

I just updated. While the update was almost 2 gb, it must have overwritten a large part of the already installed rom, because I had slightly more room on storage after updating. Liking this update so far. Still playing around with it though. Phone seems slightly more responsive.

I am hoping it removed that annoying wifi notifcation in the notification tray and allowed it to be put up in the quick toggles. I doubt it though as I am sure someone would have mentioned it. Such a dumb change from Verizon. :'( Mine finished updating and is optimizing apps currently. I will report back later today. I definitely noticed (prior to update) the frame rate lag when opening and closing apps. So this will be one of the first things I test. Also the gallery had some pretty serious lag. So I will be checking that too. Hopefully it all works okay.

The wifi is still seated in the notification pane. :(

Updated via the Verizon tool. Phone is definitely snappier and no animation lag. I have ~900MB of free RAM now. Before the update I never had more than 400 or so.

Smart pause was added to the toggle page. Not wifi :(

Trying to update my s4 but when i plug my phone into my computer i am not getting the prompt for the Verizon update program. Am i forgetting something?
