Verizon had an out of the box update to improve wifi connectivity. I had the same update and it would fail each time I tried to install it. I called Google and was passed over to Verizon support. They couldn't figure out why it wouldn't install. Ended up not being an issue, I moved the phone over to Sprint and received the latest update the day it came out without issue. The phone has been working perfectly on Sprint now for over a month.

I think the update you are seeing with the Verizon sim card is the Verizon only update.

It was actually the Nov. Security update, and it only failed to update without the Verizon sim in. I tried it a number of different ways without, but ultimately the phone refused to update until until I kept the Verizon sim in. Every time the Verizon sim was installed the update IMMEDIATELY showed up, like within a few seconds. Take out Verizon sim, update disappears. It updated just fine when I finally let it go through with the Verizon sim in. So it was not the early wifi update, my phone was new enough it already had it. It was the Nov. security patch and it would not update without the Verizon sim. Even if it's just going to be delayed that's messed up. Phone is too expensive already and first updates are one of the few selling points. That's compromised.
