Android Central Question

Certain photos that were taken with the mobile device (Galaxy S7) fail to send in either messages or message+ text messaging app. Even if you crop the photo and then save it (different file name), the photo will not send in the text messaging app. The photo will send in email or Facebook messenger without problems.

This device had been working just fine until about 4 days ago when this problem started. One picture would not send so I cropped it and it would not send, Then I deleted it and took a new one. That one sent just fine. Then the next 4 or 5 pics sent very well then the next pic fails during sending. Seems to be related to the picture file but it's a very strange problem.

What's been done so far

- Powered phone off and then back on
- Cleared Cache in Message+
- Cleared Cache and Data in Gallery
- Turned off wifi to try mobile network
- Ran performance turning tools and removed memory from apps and cleared out as much system memory as possible.
- Forced stop on both Message+, Messages and Gallery
- checked for app updates on Message+, Messages and Gallery
- sent picture through e-mail and saved it to another device. Then sent the picture back to the phone in a different email. Saved the new picture to the mobile device in the downloads folder. Tried to send the picture in downloads folder with a text message and the send failed.

Mobile Device Software was last updated to G930VVRSBCTA1 on April 8, 2020. No updates are pending. This is Android 8.0.0

Some more information on the problem. I installed "Chomp SMS" and was able to send the failing pictures without any issues. So it looks like this is isolated the problem to Message+ (verizon app) and Messages (Google app). I'll try to re-install them.

So with "Chomp SMS" working on the phone, I then tried to uninstall Message+ and Messages but they are system apps. The only thing you can do is Disable them. I tried clearing the data on both and using them but they both failed on sending one of the failing pictures. So failure mode still exists. I think this problem has definitely been troubleshot down to the two system apps Message+ (verizon) and Messages(google). Probably the only way to re-install them is to re-install Android on the device but I'm not sure how to do that yet. For now, I'll just use the Chomp SMS app. This phone was an old Verizon phone that was switched over to the discount carrier RedPocket 6 or 8 months ago. Not sure if there is some Verizon software change that is causing this problem but in any case I have a work around. So I'm good for now.
