Okay, this is a weird one, almost feel silly asking it. But it bugs me, so... Just got my N6P on Sunday, and it seems fine. I've noticed, though, that some of the ringtones (including the default, starts with a "T," can't remember the name and my phone is in the other room) sound "scratchy." I played the same ringtones on my Nexus 5, and don't hear the same sounds.
The thing is, the speaker is otherwise fine. I played a number of other items, songs, video, other ringtones, and there's no issue. Also, the "scratchy" parts of the ringtones sound the same in both speakers.
So, my silly question is: do some of the built-in ringtones have a scratchiness to them on your N6P? It's possible that they added that element to them since shipping the Nexus 5, but it seems like an odd thing to do since at first hearing it sounds like the speakers are distorting. And, I'd think that if my speakers were faulty, I'd hear distortion on other tracks.
Incidentally, I'm surprised at how low the volume is in general, both via the external speakers and the headphone jack. Sound is definitely one of the more disappointing aspects of the phone.
