Some ways to diagnose battery drain issues?

Restart fixes it. The problem is that it drains with the screen off (i.e. while idle), so it's hard to detect - you pick up your phone and boom, 15% battery left all of a sudden.

I just exchanged my phone (AT&T next to me finally got the white one in stock). Will keeps you guys posted if I see the issue on the new device (it is also running 1.85 vs 1.73 on my older one).

i've got the international version and so far i've done a full factory reset 3 times now and as soon as i get all the apps that i use and accounts setup i get absolute crap for battery life, won't last past 4 hours of usage.

completely at a loss for this phone right now, will probably be returning it.

krimzon - but the battery life is good before you install the apps? Maybe something you're installing is causing a battery drain. It also be coincidental, as my issue seemed to be.

Try exchanging your device. I did that yesterday, seems to be OK for now, although I really need a few weeks to make sure that battery issue doesn't pop up again.

i bought mine unlocked and may not be able to exchange it or return it without getting docked for a restocking fee, i've already switched back to my 9900 for the time being. the company i bought the phone from wants 30 days to test the phone before proceeding with a refund or exchange.

I don't know what to do at this point. My newly exchanged phone has the same exact battery issue. Was great yesterday and overnight - and then something happened this morning, see attached picture.

This is with the phone sitting basically idle, as you can see by screen usage. Is there any sort of software that can diagnose if there is a process that's killing the battery? The default app doesn't show anything insightful, and neither does GO Power Master or BetterBatteryStats. This is a deal breaker for me, a phone can't just lose 50% battery in a couple hours of doing nothing.

I was having a similar problem on my phone...

I would leave it on my nightstand when I got to bed with a 50% charge, and when I woke up in the morning, the phone was dead. The difference for me, was that the battery screen would indicate that at some point during the night, the phone had woken up and stayed awake for the rest of the night draining the battery.

Weird! The phone here definitely doesn't wake the screen - since the phone is sitting next to me, I can see the screen is off.

Your high drain periods coincide with a red indicated area on your cell signal graph.

Its like a high active period of cell system battery usage or something. Maybe a nearby tower went down and the phone was trying extra hard to reach towers further away?

Agreed. Do You have the battery usage screengrab too?

Attaching additional pictures. The signal - I'm on the subway every morning and evening to/from work for 20 minutes.

Aaah, so how do you know it was "awake"?

In that first pic you posted..

It shows you the charge of the battery, mobile network signal, "awake", and screen on. The blue area would be filled in under "awake" indicating that the phone was awake, but it would remain white in the "screen on" area.

I had a process keeping my phone awake called HTCDM, and i think it's related to the update.

I think if you click on Phone Idle it shows up there. Might not, though, so try all the other ones.

brekfest - I see, that makes sense. Mine doesn't do that, but agree, that's a weird problem as well.

Kevin - I tried all of them, don't see the process anywhere. What did you do to fix that issue?

icebike - someone on XDA suggested it may be a signal issue as well. I think what I'll try - is next time I see my battery draining like crazy, I'll do an Airplane Mode on/off cycle to see if that solves it (rather than restarting).

The only thing is, if this were the case, I feel like a ton more people would have this issue?

I would kill to be getting that type of battery life. My One X drops 10% an hour. I have already done one reset of the phone, disabled LTE and reduced syncing apps and brightness down to the lowest I am willing to tolerate. But nothing seems to help.

I am going to try one more reset and only have it sync gmail to make sure I don't have some app sucking my battery dry, even though in the usage there is nothing that stands out other then display. If that fails I am going to take it back. Not sure if I will ask for a new one or just go back to my S2 for now.

gdbjr, I hear you man. My battery use just feels so inconsistent, across both of the One X units that I have tried. Some days it works great, some days it is absolutely atrocious.

This is really frustrating, battery life is one of the most important factors for a mobile device. It doesn't have to be superb, but it has to be relatively consistent, so you know when to recharge, etc.

I am really considering returning the phone and just going back to my iPhone 3GS, to wait for iOS6 and iPhone 5. I love the flexibility of Android, but these battery issues are a dealbreaker, and I hear that this occurs on other Android-running hardware as well with "rogue processes" draining down the battery.
